cabelas has been running a sale on Yugos for $129... its really hard to pass up, unfortunately, I dont have the money to spare right now. I did convince my shootin buddy to pick one up, and we spent all night cleanin up the cosmoline. Its a really nice specimen... wood has very minor dings, no nicks, and the rifle appears to be unfired... at least unfired since the last refinish. Barrel was pristine, and the bolt, carrier, and all the gas system appeared brand spankin new.

somebody give me a quick rundown of the history of these...

From what I know, they were refinished/reworked in 66 to add the grenade launcher right?

what else was done at that time? One thing I noticed was all the numbers match, but on the bolt, the stamped number is 00-000-022 or something like that... can't remember how many 0's, but the number after that was 22. Is that normal, or an import number or something? Any special markings to look for? Any issues?

Don't you make me go and start stocking up on 7,62x39 just so I've got an excuse to buy another rifle!

Jettag, like you need much of an excuse? I think in the last four months or so I have gotten an chinese sks para, a russian and a mak-90, heck stocking up on 7.62x39 was easy to justify. Go for it.

On the sn, There is a list out there, one of the characters in the sn denotes the year of manufacture. As for conversions from 59's, I think that they built them after 66 thus as just 59/66 with the gernade launcher. The yugos were buiding them into the eighties.
Heres a link to the list of how to date your sks there.

I dont know how I can pass on one of these puppies, but I truly have no money for this one. I just spent all my extra cash buying knives as my groomsmen gifts from Bucking the System on Gunboards.

btw, give him a call if you want a custom knife... [/shameless plug]

Ill see what I can do about buying one of these Yugos. I fugred with it being cabelas, and the price tag on them that they would be beaten up, but the guywho bought one said that they brought out 4 and they all looked unissued... and COVERED in cosmoline! Ive never seen anythng like it... and Ive had to clean up cosmo before... just not like this!

I think theres a good history of the sks out there on siminov.net(spelling) i think its there, that tells about the sks "road show", how the Soviets took their engineers thru the soviet bloc(except for albania which got its rifle devloped from China) and each year a nation started sks production. Then the soviets shipped the entire production to china when the akm was fully developed(most folks dont realize it but the ak was adopted right after the sks but not fully into production until the akm was brought out, the soviets built the milled ak's thus not much simpler than the sks untill they got the stamped models right but heck thats another story)

I have so many rifles in 7.62 x39,I may have to sell my house and live in the pile of ammo boxes. Talk about the ammo price increase hitting you where you live!
All of it started out with a Chinese SKS.
It's funny,it doesn't LOOK like a crack pipe.:help:

LMAO!

That's pretty good.

I wish I had the money to buy up all these cheapo deals that are around right now. I have a strange feeling Im gonna miss the bus on some of em if not all of em. I tell my fiance every now and then (ok every day) that if I weren't marrying her, Id eithe rbe in the middle east right now fighting or Id have about 50 Yugos, and 100 Mosins! Who knows what else! Who needs a retirement fund when you can afford to buy cheap guns... I trust the gun market much more than I trust most mutual funds!

Hopefully those SKS's will still be there in a couple weeks while I can scrape together a little change.

Its funny you say that, they used to sell wooden ammo boxes here and I have heard stories of folks litterly building houses from the scrap ammo boxes by stacking them like blocks, and flilling the voids with insulation then sheathing them outside and in. The box tops are said to make good roof decking. Not sure if its true but a nice rumor around here.

Ya you are right though not looking like a crack pipe, mine started with a lonely chinese sks too, but that stuffs adictive.
