I have just about got the "mongrel" AK kit ready to put together except for one problem. How do you get the top part of the handguard off to refinish it? Looks like it is held on by the front piece that is spot welded to the gas piston tube. I don't really want to drill out those as the original finish is way too nice. Any suggestions?
To Imblitzvt: Looks like this "dog might have a little "pedigree" after all. (inside joke for you new guys)

If you are talking about the wood in the gas tube? I just placed the end of the gas tube in a padded vice, then used my hands to turn the wood out carefully as the wood seemed to be dry.

The handguard comes of with the bolt removed. Rotate lever next to rear sight up, then lift up rear of gas tube.
To remove wood from tube, I like to put the square, rear of the tube in a vise. Then grasp the wood firmly (that sounds wrong, don't it?), and twist it around 180 degrees. Then it will pull straight off the tube. Be very careful as they are easy to crack.

.... also be careful you don't get your skin caught in between the wood and the gas tube

I like to do it the other way around. I put the wood part loosely in the padded vice, and take a crescent wrench and turn the square part of the gastube. That way the pressure is evenly distrubuted, I like to try to get some liquid wax in between the wood and metal at the edges to help lubricate it. If it seems to hang, slowly work it back and forth rotating it a bit more each time.Be gentle as the Yugo handguard can crack very easily.
