I posted this in the old forum, but since that is gone I might as well put it here too. I got this sucker in my back yard. With my .22 Diana.

All our squirrels are gray. Some black ones in south Georgia where I hunt.

Most of the tree rats around me are grey too. A friend & I were messing around with our sks's one day and saw one of the tree rats jumping around. We wanted to shoot it so we followed him for a while. Well, eventually it got on the back side of a pine tree so I thought I would scare the damn thing to the side facing me & my friend, by shooting at the trunk of the tree. I told my friend to get ready & I aimed right about where I thought he was. I pulled the trigger and the next thing I know the squirrel is falling to the ground dead. I guess the Force was with me that day cause I shot that little bastard through the chest, after my bullet went through the tree trunk.:sterb029: :sterb029: :sterb029:

You wasted it if you didn't skin it and eat it. This one tasted mighty good.

I am sure the raccoons made sure that he did not go to waste.

I just don't think that way when I hunt. Merely "blowing away" little furry creatures for it's own sake is rather disgusting to me. It makes me feel angry when people revel in it.

Liewise.. I still hunt squirrel with my son and enjoy it. We eat them after we shoot them or we don't shoot them at all. When I was younger I was in to hunting crows and Fox. I had decoys game calls etc.. One day I shot one and saw his lifless body, I thought why did you take his life for no reason? He was busy doing what ever crows do all day and I killed him on a whim. So at that point I stopped shooting things like crows, pigieons and groundhogs for fun.
If a friend or neighbour asked me to kill a groundhog or Fox for them. I will ..
But i just don't shoot animals for the hell of it. I had a friend ask me to kill a stray cat who was hanging around his property. I turned him down, I don't shoot cats and dogs unless they have been ran over or a very sick.
On the other hand.. I have shot all of my own dogs when they got deathly ill rather than have a vet pump them full of poisin. I was going to have my old beloved Irish setter put to sleep years ago. I asked my uncle to take her to the vet as I could not do it..
He said people used to take of their own buisness, rather than the vet..
He asked me did I understand what that meant..
I got it..
I know I drifted way OT .. but I was on a roll..

You guys are lucky to have a year-round squirrel season. Here in Minnesota, we have a specific squirrel season. Get caught shooting squirrels out of season and you lose the gun and your rights to hunt for several years. I love small game hunting. Squirrel or Rabbit pot pie or stew is great. My mom used to bread and fry them, but stewing in a crock pot is a lot less work. Mmmm...

The only reason I kill them is because they get into the birdfeeder and rip up the American flags we have setup outside. They are a bunch of little terrorists.:osama:

wow.. sorry didn't mean to offend any members

i just take headshots cause they're more challenging and the animal doesn't suffer as much as it would with a gut shot or even a heart shot

I think they were charging and they had no choice...

I also, prefer to hunt licensed, following the rules and seasons laid out by the department of Fish and Game. Otherwise I feel like just a "slob" hunter.
Also, If I don't plan on eating it I won't hunt it.

My exception to this rule are the red squirels that chew into the attic, or through the dormer facing constantly. I sick my teenager on them with the
,177 RWS. This is legal pest control.

Henry, I'm not offended by the pics either. I've seen the results enough times. The "bang! headshot" machine gun smilie reminded me of the dark side of people and guns and critters no one cares about. LorDiego probably didn't even mean it that way. It just reminded me of what some people call, "hunting."

A better squirrl launcher I saw was using a clay pigon launcher, sprinkle some loose corn and wait. Then "PULL" man do they fly!!! I'll have to look for the video.

If you are looking for a challenge in squirrel hunting, try barking one. Instead of shooting the squirrel, you shoot the limb just under the front legs of the squirrel. Works best with round ball muzzle loaders. If you do it right the concussion kills the squirrel with no bullet holes in him. If you miss, he jumps up and runs off no worse for wear. This is how your great gand daddies hunted with the family smoke pole.

all's good, no worries!!!
for animals like armadillos and racoons, which just chew up my friend's mother's garden and their orchard, i don't have a problem taking care of. i won't try to shoot anything just to watch it die. that's not right

Im not gonna lie... I tend to shoot animals like squirrels and rabbits just for fun... I DO use them as bait for coyotes... does that count for using what you kill?

Varmint hunting is one of my favorite things to do... tests the skills and you have to shoot with the adrenaline rather than completely calm like when shooting steel.
