View Full Version : .22 plinking fun-gun suggestions?

So, I got a small Christmas bonus, which I haven't spent, yet. I looked into getting the ball rolling on some sort of Krink SBR, but I think I'll just got with something fun, cheap to shoot and a little less scary when the nearest neighbors here me blasting away.
So, I'm looking for suggestions, for a fun .22. I'm thinking of something "militaryesque" and probably a rifle. Doesn't have to be super-accurate, but I would like decent performance with iron sights and good reliability.
I've looked at some of the 10/22 dress-up kits, but they all look a little cheap and toyish. Except maybe the Krinker Plinker, but that is a bit pricy for me, for cosmetics.
So, currently, I'm looking at a PPSh in 22 (saw one locally at a gunstore and a Calico M-100.
Any other suggestions welcome! Total budget is somewhere around $500.

Ruger 10/22's are hard to beat for the $$$, and if you want something "militaryesque" you could always do Rampager's M1 carbine clone/conversion

Well, if you're looking for a rifle, you should forgo the "militaryesque" and get a marlin semiauto. around a hundred bucks or so, I've had one since 1983 and it's still going strong. 18 shots blah blah blah... However, I strongly recommend the Walther P-22 pistol. I bought one about a year ago, and that little thing is, well, more fun than a squirrel in the house. (If you've never had that happen, then you probably can't relate to that little hyperbole, but you get the idea...)

You think the P22 is better than a Ruger Mk2 or 3? If I were to go for a pistol, that is.
Hahaha, it'd funny you should mention the squirrels, I have some in my roof right now, keeping me awake all night doing unspeakable acts with each other. I told a friend at work I was tired because I had squirrels in my roof, and he thought it was some obscure euphemism for a hangover!
pistol wise i've orderd a beretta neos from budsgunshop $227 shipped&ins.(let everybody know how that works next week) rifle wise the 10/22 is hard to beat. atlantic firearms is taking preorders for that german made 22 that looks like an mp5.(due in jan/feb of this year):icon_biggrin:

I only have one .22 and that's a P22 with a AAC Pilot can. I absolutely enjoy the thing. Plus they're to cheap to say no to.
However, my friend has an integral suppressed 10/22 which is just a hoot. Would probably be only other 22 Id even consider buying.

I went with a Walther G22 and P22 combo both in OD. I wouldn't trade either of them. Both can spit out rounds as fast as I can pull the trigger... downside to both is there are no Hi-cap mags.
The G22 is a bullpup, and handles great, and outshoots a bull-barreled 10-22 if you scope both. The barrel is match-grade as is the chamber, so copper jacketed bullets are out. It gobbles up the Federal cheap stuff and Remington Thunderbolt.
The P22 is the coolest 22 pistol IMO. The Rugers are sweet, but bulky. I want one of them too, but the P22 is just as fun, and you can add a silencer with ease.
About the Beretta Neos... A buddy of mine has one... I can't stand it. the grip angle is the funkiest thing I've ever held in my hand, and the "stock" of the pistol wraps over onto your wrist... its an odd one. It is however accurate, and it has a full scope rail if you are into that.

I love my little P22... it litteraly was so cute it followed me home.
Possibly the most amusing part of it is with the three inch barrel and CCI Mini-mags, I get asked if it's 9mm all the time... I guess it's loud for a .22........

What....no one is throwing in the Sig Mosquio?
For a rifle...you can't beat the old Henry lever action. It is just a classic!

The Ruger 10/22 and Mark II's are hard to beat even if you go with the
thin barreled jobs. If you put any time on them what so ever to get used
to them, you would hard pressed to not be able to hit pop cans or small
game at 40-50 yards with open sights. I'm not going to bad mouth any of
the others but Rugers and their accessories are everywhere, there is nine
places within 30 minutes of me to get that stuff and only one has Browning
Buckmarks and none stock Walther or Sig anything. My pick would be of
dependability and accessability. JMHO

Romanian M1969 .22 Bolt Action Training Rifle (or it might also be called MDL69?). Hands down my favorite .22 I own. Cheap as hell, military-esque, and awesome. I got one as a gift, super-accurate and overall very nice rifle. My grandpa got 4 for 125 Dollars like 10 years ago. Gave me one, but I see them from time to time for like 80 dollars with 2 5-round mags.

my best friend has one, and it's a complete jammatic. wont go through more than 3 rounds at a time EVER. maybe his is just a lemon, but I won't be buying a Sig .22 any time soon
I heard that some of the early production Walthers had some kaboom problems, but I think they have fixed that by now. they look and "feel" the best to me
the ruger pistols are very accurate and reliable, but they are a bit bulky as jfowl mentioned, as in heavy duty.

I have the g-22 and p-22, both in black. Probably the best .22s around. Not the cheapest but you get what you pay for. The p-22 looks just like the p-99 and can be mistaken for it at a glance.

If you like the Ruger design, you'll like it even better with internals from Volquartsen. Slicks up and lightens the trigger, buffers what recoil there is, and improves the bolt-stop. The best part is that you can install everything you need by yourself. I'm sold.:bash::bash:

i like your style hulygan.... I got the same except mine are both in OD. I want to add a P99 in OD to complete the collection.

hard to beat a bull barreled MKII...... i can hit a golfball at almost 200 feet offhand with one, and theyre built like the proverbial brick poophouse..... as far as a rifle.... well i've always favored bolt action .22s but a 10/22 or Marlin would be my choice for semi autos........ just my .02

Why not get a 10/22 and militarize it....I'm thinking bad spraypaint camo job and a "spork" duct taped to the muzzle end ala-bayonet...
/I remember seeing a Rhineland Arms 22 (similar in looks to the G-3) here on the forums. Are they in production yet?
//personally I think an iron sighted 10/22 or Marlin M-60 is the best way to spend money on a plinker. Anyone can shoot a scoped rifles but ironsites exhibit true marksmanship.

For the 10/22 there is always the krinker plinker, that takes a 10/22 and makes it look like a krink sbr, but no paper work. The bottom one in the photo is legal, has a fake can on it.
The 10/22 is almost the gold standard for 22 plinker rifles, I have my marlins, even a two browning copy autoloaders but will always toss the Ruger in the car for lots of low cost fun at the range, if you get one get the speed loaders too.
Another neat rifle if you want the mil look, is the Marlin model 60, m1, looks like a m1 carbine.

I don't know about $500 but those No2 Enfields are very fun and accurate, although single shot.
You could always do a search on the No7, CNo7 or a No8. Those are the later 22 Enfields.

you can get into the GSGN MP5-22
Gorden Miller is taking orders for them now. They were sitting at right around $500.
They are already making Supressor attachments for these.

If low cost high cap mags are important, then the 10/22 are hard to beat on that line, but how many mags do you want, or get a speed loader and five hundred rounds are toast in no time. I went to the range with my model 70 marlin and my 10/22 both with three or four mags and a speed loader. Then I proceded to shoot almost a thousand rounds in a few hours.

My vote is for a Ruger 22 auto pistol or the Harrington and Richards model 999 HB target pistol. For that matter any 22. pistol with a 6 inch barrel is great fun and if it is used a great buy.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, guy!! Very much appreciated. While I think I'll probably go with the 10/22 and think about doing the M1 Carbine conversion to it in the future, you've given me a lot to think about.
Did anyone else see the add in the back of this week's SGN for the German-made .22lr StgW./MP.44 that just got ATF approval? It's made by these guys: http://www.waffenschumacher.com/ though I couldn't find anything on that site about it. The add also says they are seeking a US distributor/importer. I'm guessing it's gonna be pricey, though.

For military style .22's, you must check out; Rockin Rimfires (http://www.gunfax.com/rimfires/rimfires.htm).
I've always been into the military rimfire's, long before I started with 'real' EBR's. RR was the first gunboard I ever signed up for (the board is now long closed and gone). I ended up with several examples featured.:icon_biggrin:

Also don't forget the Henry 22 survival for a plinker, it's a fun and light weight gun to shoot and is pretty accurate to 50 yards.
