I picked up my mail today and in the pile of the usual worthless ads and junk letters there was a letter from the DAV with their usual return address stickers and some nice flag reflective stickers. I usually just reach into my car, write a check out and put the stickers on my desk, but this time I read the info they included and was shocked at what they were asking for a donation. $.02/day for one year or the whopping sum of $7.30! I am sure I am not the only one on this forum that got this letter either, but am amazed that is all they really were asking for. I always send more, and understand that they will take whatever you can afford to send, but $7.30 began to bother me. Is this all these men mean to this country? And why doen't more people send in money? This seems a very small price for what these men have done for this country and yet they remain the faceless soldiers that everyone has forgotten to a large degree. They want to be remembered for their accomplishments and want us to know they did their job so that we can have forums like this, that we are free from oppression, and that the American way of life will continue. And they only wanted $7.30.
Maybe I am out of touch with reality and maybe I live in a very simplified world believing that a man's word is his bond, that God and family come before all else, that these men fought not because they had too, but for us here at home and for each other, and that this country owes these men and women a debt that we can never pay. If I am wrong, then please don't tell me. I don't want to know as I am happy in my beliefs.
I enclosed my check and dropped it in the mail for far more than the paltry $7.30 they asked for. In fact it will make up for many of the people in this country that will take the stickers and use them and never send in a cent. I honestly hope that those of you that read this are not some of those people.
Shame on you if you are!
