I just had to show something off. I kind of modeled it after a PUMA I saw.
The blade is cut from an old saw mill blade and after I finished it, it was washed in an acid bath we use to polish surgical needles. I wanted it to look old and it turned out better than I hoped.

Nice blade! I have always wanted to try my hand at knife making.

The slabs are Sambar stag. They were about 20.00 when I bought them. Then the ban went in and none were sold for a long while or sold at astronomical prices. I used nickle silver rods for the pins, a chunk of brass from work and silver slodered it to the blade. A piece of antler from a whitetail I took holds it in the sheath and at one time I had a mini knife piggy-backed on the side. ATS-34 in deer antler as a patch knife.

Oooooh ... Daddy like! Good job Drine. That came out really nice - looks kinda old-timer, American pioneer, cowboy, frontier-ish (OK, enough adjectives - ya know what I mean?)

Now I'm thinking I need to give that a try - I may still have some brass pcs. sitting around here somewhere from an old rusted knife I found long time ago.

Oh, GREAT - another friggin' project - hahaha

Show and tell is fun...

Very Nice! I have made a few knives in my day. I like the stag handles. Did you temper it, or just kept the steel cool while grinding?

I used one of the little 1 inch belt sanders with the 6 inch side sander. These blades are high carbon and sharpen like a razor but you can't beat on the edge much. I got a piece of D2 tool steel I want to make a Confederate bowie out of. Maybe I can retire in 20 more years and get the time.

drine,

Great work!

I've often thought about trying my hand at knife making.

Gawd, I hate it when someone has talent and I have absolutely none! :wallbash:

Seriously...great job!

Awesome! Everyone shold make one knife in theire lifetime. Start with a kit, then you can go from there.

THose sawmill blades make really awesome blades. I have a few sword-length blades made from them, and some awesome knives.

Also try taking a Nicholson file and making a knife. they are super hard, but using the belt sandr, you can keep the temper they have and make a really super sharp and tough knife. Go to garage sales for source materials, someone i always getting rid of old rusty tools, and files are in there fer pennies.

I've also made some outa worn-out straight razors...the latest was one where the years of stropping at an improper angle thickend the edge geometry to where the grid is not that hollow anymore, but just thick enough to make a nice tiny (2-3" edge) knife. I used a bullhorn prong as a handle, and I'm gonna carve that thang up. Total length might be 4-5inches, and it could unzip a deer in one swipe.

Because my Dad gave me his PUMA that he bought when he was stationed in Germany and it was stolen by some frakkin tweaker! It looked quite similar to what ya got there though...

Really nice job Drine!

He picked it out of the ashes when his uncle's house burnt to the ground. Just the blade was left. Sent it to PUMA USA in Oregon I think and in 6 weeks he got it back completely refinished and the correct sheath for it. Thay did it free and asked that he allow them to use the story. The only difference in his and anew one was two diny dings from a Rockwell hardness tester. Evidently the fire didn't hurt it at all. Temper was still perfect. David
BTW,
Check Cheaper than dirt's catalog. They are selling PUMA's like mad. A clip point bowie style was under 100 bucks and the white under was under 200. Very fine knive's

I've gotta few from my dad's day, he got them for cheap, and they appreciate purty darn fast...especially the patterns they don't make any more.
