A few days ago I decided to take a chance and order one of the 1888 Commission Rifles from OWS. They were absolutely correct in their description, "Old filthy, junky, missing parts, no buttstock" what a POS. It is so filthy with rust and dirt, it looks like it was buried in somebody's backyard for the last 75 years! :D
But I ain't bitchin' it is exactly what they said it would be! Now I just gotta find a bolt, some assorted screws and a stock for it! That along with a serious scrubbing and derusting. Actually the rust is mostly surface rust, not much pitting on most of the parts that are actually there.
This one's gonna end up in storage for a while, until I don't have anything more worthwhile to work on. :087:

I've thought about one of those for a while. Bolts show up on ebay every once in a while. Some place online has a small supply of bolts but I can't remember who.

should have jumped on it earlier when CFS had bolts to go along with it, and they came with cracked stocks

Here's a couple of pics, I had to go wash my hands after I took outta the box, before I'd even touch my Cheap POS camera, I was afraid rust germs would jump from my hands to the camera and ruin it! :D
What markings I could see through the rust, Spandau 1890 on the receiver with an S mark above the Spandau, then marks on one the top sling swivel clamp, 4 G.R.E 4200, then on the other side of the clamp is a 75.
On the side of the receiver is what appears to be GERR 88, there is so much grime and rust over it I'm not sure.
I'll clean it up this weekend, at least degrease it, and try and get most of the surface rust off and then relube it all for storage.
I'm looking at this as a piece of history, heck Corporal Hitler could have carried this during WWI.

Smokehouse, do those stocks look like they were cut or just dammaged in storage. If cut I wonder if they werent last ditch weapons in 1945 or something like that.

You cannot expect too much for a firearm selling for less than thirteen dollars if you buy a dozen of them can you?

I found out that the S above the Spandau mark signifies that it was rebarreled at an armory at some time to use modern 7.92 ammo. It'll be a while before I put any down that barrel, gotta find a bolt and stock, along with some more parts. :D

SO, do I order a 5 pack of them? I think they would make a fun project, but I can't find bolts anywhere. I assume they are somewhere, in a big rusting pile.

I don't know, if all five are in the condition my one was in, it might be a hurdle to big to clear for me. Bolts, I suspect that some guy, somewhere has a big pile of them, and he's selling them one by one on Ebay! :D

I've seen quite a few people get stocks with theirs, Unless they are getting to the bottom of the pile and only the crappiest ones are left.

From what old western scrounger says all they have are the ones without stocks, which other places listing these have better examples.

I think I might order a 5-pack, It'd be nice to get a shooter or two out of the bunch, and then some sell-able parts. I'm going to call and see if they definitely don't have any stocks.

confirmed, no buttstock on any of them now. I still want to order a 5 pack even though I know it's a bad idea.

Hope its that and not what is going thru my mind, the easiest way to demil those rifles quickly would be to seperate the bolts(and maybe destroy them) from the rifles, one of the steps of destroying military equipment or making it unusable by the enemy(or occupying army)
