The Kalashnikov with grey furniture actually looks good. At a distance breakup of color would make it harder to identify as a firearm. The gold paint isn't the best idea. Also, can anyone get a good enough view to see if the auto sear pin is present? It would be real interesting to know where these came from too.

We have an anuall fishing trip to a small fishing village bout 3 hours across the frontier (border). This year we cancelled it because of the huge crime wave surge.
See alot of HK's on the trip at the military road stops along the way along with M60s and those mounted belt fed gernade launchers. Saw that for the first time last trip. And I recognise those blue police uniformes.
If you go to Mexico City you'll see vertually every jewelry store with an MP5 toting guard at the enterance.

The M16 looks very odd - may just be the camera angle and pic. The SEAL with the LAAW has his slings crossed (one for the LAAW and one for the HK). The LAAW is also in a very uncomfortably slung position. The 'VC' doesn't look Asian and has been stripped of his AK, but not his chest rig. Looks more like he is wearing jeans than black PJs common in South and North Vietnam.
Not saying they aren't real SEALS in Vietnam ... but I wonder if they were asked to 're-enact' some earlier event for the camera?

The crossed sling appearance is from the M-72 LAW slung under the right arm. The sling looks thin because of the angle. The M-16 does look a bit odd. The bbl looks shorter and the brake looks bigger than a bird cage flash hider. Could be the angle or could be because it is at the edge of the photo. Camera tech from the early 70's may have been a bit off. The lens perifery may be the culprit. The guy does look more Hispanic than Asian but there are wide ranges of appearance in Asia. Once again camera angle?

early on many of the troops had a regular stock put on the short carbines. the flash suppressor is really a 4.5" suppressor ( moderator) that was also used on them.
looks like this may have been late 68 or early 69 because of the 30 round mag in the m-16.
many of the vc wore jeans, they were called "cowboys" most were just gang thugs. most lived in the centeral highland and along the na trang area
many were french/vietnamese, ran accross them several times. remember the french were there before us.
the cammo "tiger strips" look to be the 66-69 era.
braded parachute cord was use a bunch for slings. "the cord had other special uses"
there were several seal teams in vietnam, most of them were in the delta area, but 1 team worked the na trang coast line area.

I have always like the Portugese cammo pattern, along with its close cousin the Rhodesian.
The Portuguese have committed to the 5.56 cartridge, though are still deciding which rifle (remember that FMP/INDEP sold all their G3 stuff to JLD here in the US!). The Paras tried-out the Galil in the early 1990s, and some SF units have fielded the SIG 540. They have been running tests on NATO ally weapons, like the M16 and the various bullpups. However, it seems fairly certain they will go with the G36.
That lizard pattern was phased-out in the 1980s when they adopted the Brit DPM. Probably when the African wars were done and NATO/Europe become the focus. It was based upon the French lizard pattern. I suspect the Rhodesian pattern was then modeled on the Portu style.
The paras still wear the distinctive Dolman jacket, though. I have heard from friends that the Portuguese Navy/ Marines may still issue the lizard pattern - but not sure about that.

Could it be an earlier AR? Some Special Forces did a private purchase on AR's before the M-16 was developed. In fact, their response to how well the AR worked is one of the reasons that the M-16 was finally developed...

From the looks of the HK magazine, it appears to be a G-33, 5.56 rifle.
Para cord for a sling, thats gotta dig into the shoulder a bit.
30 rd mag in the M-16 definately puts it into the late 60's.

On the second to last photo of the Karens. I see a Wood stocked G3. But what are the two SMGs on the left. One had a long oval sloted barrel jacket and a STEN like mag well that points down. The both have M3 Grease gun type sliding wire stocks. The short dude with the cigarette, has what appears to be a oversized wooden pistol grip.
I can't make out the SMG on the right, I thought it was a Thompson, but now I don't think so.
Can anybody tell me what they are? ( 1950s Beligian? Dutch?)
To be honest they look like a weapon one of you guys with 'skills' built in his shop.

I think they are Red Chinese type 85s. The were made for Chinese police and export in the mid 1980s and appears to be one if not the last all steel stamped WW 2 type SMGs built by a major power.

I think so and yes, the ADF is serving as part of the UN nation building programme in East Timor - training the police and defense force (FDTL).
