My first AK was a pre-ban Hungarian SA-85M, which I still have. I've always favored the Hungarians as the quality can't be beat. I have 5 other Hungarians, an SA2000M that I converted to high cap, a milled kit on a Bulgy receiver, 2 AMD63's built on ITM receivers, and a SA-85 kit built on an ITM. I have 3 MAK-90's 2 in 7.62x39 and 1 in .223. I'm also deep into the Yugo's as I have an M-90 in .308 with scope, an M-70 fixed stock with an NDS receiver and Zrak scope rail, and an M-90A .223 kit that I'm waiting for NDS's next run of receivers to be completed. I'm also mounting the Zrak rail on the M-90A, as its the only rail that will clear the underfolder stock. They are designed to take the SVD style scope mounts. If I had to choose 1, I couldn't. I would have to choose 2, and that would be the Yugo M-90 and M-90A.

Well, I only have the one, and it is an underfolder Romanian.

and I love it.

I've recently shot a WASR10, SA-85M, M70AB2 and a Romy G. The SA-85M feels the smoothest. Too bad it has the bayonet lug cut off. I've moved the WASR10 and the two M70AB2s to good homes. I'm keeping the SA-85M, but I'm not sure what to do with the Romy G. It's a newly built one on an ITM receiver and I paid the same for it as the two M70s at an auction recently.

http://www.frontiernet.net/~hill195/Gunpix/romy.jpg

Not sure how I'll get my money out of it aside from selling it to an uninformed person. My boss at work is eyeing it. If I wind up keeping it, I am seriously looking at putting a Romanian 75 rd drum on it. Kind of like an Eastern Euro Thompson...

My next AK is going to be a Krinkov. I already have a M92 receiver from NDS, but sold my parts kit before I could work on it. It was a virgin kit and I'm not sure I felt like messing with that anyway. I will probably pick up another kit soon, as long as the AR bug settles down. The Rock River Arms dealer catalog that came in the mail on Friday is killing me.

The Hungarians are nice for sure!
Got too many Aks to list, but right now my favorite seems to be the MD63 underfolder.
Though I took the Polish UF to the range last week and I could not seem to miss,so that one may overtake the Romy.

The M76 of course is the king of my collection.
I have to say I like all of them.

Here us my Underfolder AK built by Black River Gunsmithing in Grafton, Ohio. The receiver is Ohio Ordnance and the furniture is East German. The basic parts kit is Romanian. The rifle is parkerized. This guy builds these things in lots of around 20. He fully backs up everything he builds.

To getting a Yugo underfolder, the M70ab2. I fondled one this weekend, and they are nice builds, solid and quality. Plus, it'll match my Yugo SKS!

The AK variants I've fired are Saiga and the Romy AK, and I think the Romy AK for the price and controllability came out on top.

I have to like all of my ak children equally, the chinese ones, my oldest is a chinese hunter. Then the first evil one, an sar1, then the egyptians, another romanian, wasr-10 with the side folder, then russian/saigas one in 308, a 223 and then a 7.62x39. Then I found the romanian sar-2 but dont get out and shoot that one much. Finally got another mak-90 so I guess I just have to like them all equally. One of these days I will have to get around to building the kits.

Well seems like I'm gonna be the heretic around here.

This is my favorite.
Here's a couple pics of my Romanian.
Went with Ultimak rails, 1.25 longer stock, new grip I found from Command Arms, G2 trigger group and the trigger plate to replace that shepherds crook wire.
Polished up the bolt carrier and bolt.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v427/wulf50guy/100_0760.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v427/wulf50guy/100_0757.jpg

A little better view of the grip and stock. the grip has rubber interchangeable front and rear sections to get the grip just right for your hand.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v427/wulf50guy/100_0759.jpg

And a close up of the rails and fake point I put on it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v427/wulf50guy/100_0758.jpg

I can consistently hit 200 yd steel plates with it so I'm happy.

LMAO! CLassic!

Geez, wulf...that's a lotta upgrades! wow. How much you got in upgrades in that?

Probably as much as the rifle.
But hell I don;t have anything else to do with my extra cash except tinker..:D
the rails were about $200 for the lower and $95 for the upper rail.
The fake point was about $60 maybe. Got about $70 in the stock and grip.
Can't remember what I paid for the G2. A friend of mine did the refinish for free.
And I did the polishing work on the carrier.
Like I said, about as much as the rifle.:D
But it shot so good I wanted to fix it to suit me cosmetically.
I know some people would scream BURN HIM! BURN HIM! for doing that to an AK.
But heck I like it, it fits and suits my purpose.

The Saiga 12 with Tromix conversion, Bulgarian grenade launcher recoil pad, door breecher, and AGP 10 round mags is a show stopper however.. it is one HARD recoiling shotgun. All the kick you can stand.

The Mil-Classic Wolf doesn't seem to ignite consistently outside the
barrel. I just shot some Golden Tiger and it really blows up.

The receiver is a Yugo which is has the RPK type trunnion.

Bullseye, I beleive that there were others importing them but at the time "Red Dawn" was made they were one of the few imported aks coming in to the country. There have been others importing the Maadi's includeing Pars, and I think Steyr. I think its like many importers before the ban they would import a container or two full of them and that might be it. Thats why there were so many chinese importers too. Check this link about them

I have found it to work remarkably well. It really helps with a wire folder. I did a test comparing the Ak Concept/Primary Weapons brake and the slant, AMD, muzzle nut, Chinese RPK brake, and one or two others. Nothing was as effective.

Finally got around to taking a couple pics of my black AK since I dropped in a new stock. I missed having a folder since the Tapco one broke... so I got a Romanian folder from AIM last week and found a couple screws. Calling it my EBR-47A2 and use it to poke fun at my shooting buddies who have M-4 types. Just as accurate for tactical type shooting and much harder hitting if it came down to it. Bring on the zombies!

How much do those AK-pistols weigh? are they conducive to one handed firing? With reduced cap mags? or are 30's ok?

hulygan
10-28-2007, 01:58 PM
the pistols don't weigh a whole lot less than the rifles. but one handed shooting is doable but they are a little heavy for it. if you want a pistol copes has amd-65 kits for $200 and those have the shorter barrel. I use 10 or 20 round mags in mine. just a little lighter but every little bit helps.

Truth is I had very slightly saturated and burned the photo, but that wasn't much at all. This one actually came out beautiful the way it was

We were trying to squeeze in the last bit of the day at the range, and john, he had a few more shots and wanted to see the fireball, and they had the truck on for light to pack up... it made a beautiful shot.

That is one fine milled receiver AK. From the nomenclature I assume that it is and Arsenal Rifle. I have a 101SLRG. Arsenal makes about the best AK's out there. Yours looks great with the wood. My rifle has olive green plastic furniture and is posted earlier in this thread. Mine is a post ban with a permanent muzzle brake and no bayonet lug or cleaning rod.

I realized that I never posted any pictures in this thread.
Here's my first build (reason for the screws). It will get rivets sometime this year.

It's a Romanian 1963 Dated kit. I always liked it because of the solid wood furniture and the wood pistol grip.
Today, I saw this on gunbroker:
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=90234882

The reason I started with this kit was because it was the worst condition kit I had. I figured that if I messed it up, there wouldn't be much loss. It cleaned up well.

Here's my 2006 GP WASR-10/63. She wears a Romy bayonet, Romy miltary upper and lower handgaurd, Armory pistol grip, Century slant brake, and Polish 30 round sythetic mag, the other mag is a steel Romy 30 round. Refinished the buttstock and handguards with Dupli-Color spray on bedliner (tough stuff once cured and nice sorta pebble grain that matches the texture of the pistol grip)

Exquisite Chinese Templar!
One nationality I don't yet own.

I finished this Romanian PSL over the long weekend.
Built on a coldsteel blank. Finish is Gunkote in satin black.
I rewelded the bayonet lug cause I detest how they are de-nuded as kits.
Also fashioned a workable center support/bolt hold open mechanism.
I particularly like the wood on this. Kit was gotten from MGS in '06
Man, I wish we had more of these kits.
Shoots like a female dog in heat.

New Yugo addition to the family this weekend.

Used an underfolder receiver with a lil bit of tig welding filler pieces from the old receiver. Underfolder receiver was cheap and we even welded it on in places like the original which was pretty smart I thought. Though I just skiped using any rivets in the back...cuz I didn't wanna drill what we just welded up. Took it out and it runs great.

1st pic is the line up with the newest build on the bottom, Romy G is my friend who did the welding this weekend.

I gotta say the RPK freaking ROCKS.

Romy CAI GP1975
Replaced black furniture with Bulgarian wood
4x32 scope

I got two kits from cheaperthandirt.com that came with scope, mount, rings, stripper clips speed loader, and mag pouch all for $60 and another kit that had a sling, bayonet, blank adapter, 2 mag pouches, cleaning kit, and maybe something else for $20. Check those two out, tons of stuff for next to nothing, all good shape too.

Notice my craptacular tan pistol grip, if anyone could help me out with a matching wood grip that would be great. Until then she looks like kremlin krap!
