Saw an ad in the paper for Big 5 selling M95 rifles for $79, and an additional $10 off coupon. What the store had was the M95 Carbine, listed as a rifle, and an M95 Stutzen - or short rifle - listed as the carbine. No matching numbers or anything but in nice shape. Guess who's drivers license is expired? And the CCW I have is not "ID". I put a 24hr hold on the real carbine and will be at the DMV Saturday AM. That thing is light! Reminded me of an M! carbine. I do not doubt the stories of nasty recoil. with this one. Might get a good fireball, too.

before you buy it, pull the bolt several times. i bought a bunch of them and have a few with really hard bolts to pull back. the others are as smooth as glass. they have a heavy kick. more than an m-44 IMHO. they seam to be very well built and for the money a really good investment buy.IMHO if you can buy more than 1 and put them back as an investment. buy as much ammo as you can for it also. good luck.

me and my buddy think they are lighter in recoil compared to the m44. i love mine for the look and feel. great piece of machining.

I worked the bolt several times, not glass smooth but very nice.
My M44 has to weigh at least three pounds more than the Steyr. I think the Steyr is smaller in almost every way than the M44. I'll know for sure after I get it.
The hardest kicking rifle I have is my K98 Mauser. I can shoot the M44 longer than the Mauser.

So, I renewed my drivers license this morning and went to BIG 5 to get the Steyr. It wasn't there. Even though I had a hold on it, they sold it. It was a really nice blond stock, too.
Not real happy about what happened, I inspected the others and found one I liked. Then I asked for an extra discount because they had not held the one I wanted. They gave me 10% more off. Combined with the $10 coupon and not having to pay NICS because of my CCW, the total was $64 and change.
After I get the pound of cosmo off, I'll post pics.

The carbine cleaned up nicely. Gotta love self serve car washes for taking the heavy crud off the parts. Only one spot of rust under the second barrel band that cleaned up nicely. The barrel, receiver and front barrel band have the same serial number and the bolt is electro-penciled with it.
Speaking of that %*&!?@^#%$*> bolt. I tried for two hours to get it back into the receiver. The rotating bolt head HAS to be extended and rotated. It won't extend far enough or rotate far enough or stay in place if it is both of the above. If I ever get it back in, it is NEVER being removed from the receiver again. MY hat is off to whoever got it back in in the first place.
Pics show the carbine, the short ladder rear sight, dove tail front sight and the focus of my need for blood pressure pills right now: the unextended bolt. The sights indicate it is a carbine and not a Stutzen, or short rifle,

looks really nice for the price. i think i took my bolt out and it did that same thing. i think i just grabbed it good and pulled real hard while twisting and it came back. i quickly stuffed it back in.

damn, now THATS interesting!!
The m95 is without question the most stoutest mil surp firearm ive ever shot. It blows the k98, m44 mosin, and fr8 (fr8 generally known as having a fairly stout recoil) out of the water.
To hear that you guys think it kicks less than a m44? WOW, i cant picture it.
the m95 being shot offhand from a 6 foot tall person kicks up a 4 foot diameter dust cloud from the concussion of the round - 6 feet away from the pea gravel and the concussion kicks up a mini mushroom cloud!!
that isnt my experiance whatsoever - 5 rounds was enough for me
one thing i have to advise against - do not lay in the prone supported and pull that thing in your shoulder (just trust me)

you know maybe we had some weak ammo or something but it was a fair amount less than the m44. i am 6,2" and 220 so i can manage a good amount. i will have to get some more ammo of a different kind.....

Nice looking rifle,
Speaking of excissive recoil, I finally got to shoot my 10ga a few weeks back.......
4 rounds was PLENTY. I have now saitsfied my desire to permanently damage both my shoulder and my psyche for a lifetime.
Bring on the M44!

KEERUDDD I finally got it together. I took a Dillon multi-wrench and found a size that would fit over the end against the sides of the lugs, like a two tine fork. I rotated the bolt head until I could put a dime in place to keep the head out, then slipped the bolt into the receiver, popped the dime and the bolt pushed home. (sounds kinda nasty). The bolt is harder to work than the one I put on hold, but it works. If I keep the carbine shouldered the bolt hits my nose when pulled back. I forgot to mention earlier that this is a refurb. It is counterbored and the wood has been repaired in a spot. It has the S stamped on the barrel indicating it has been rechambered to the newer round.
I have some 1938 dated ammo on clips, I figured I would try one. I've read that ammo is hotter than the Hornady ammo from Graf and Sons. If it kicks as hard as I've heard, I know someone I want to shoot it :icon_mrgreen:

LOL! I'm thinking of a recoil pad now when I go shooting, Rusty. 60 isn't that far away and I had to put 'gray' for my hair color on my license today (sob)

Nevada, which Big5? It wouldn't have been Flamingo and Buffalo was it? :088:

There is probably some nice trick to getting the bolt back in. I am sure someone here will post some good advice on how to get it back together. You might try Surplusrifle.com. They have pretty good instructions on the subject.

Take a look at the instructions in figure 5 in the bolt disassembly-reassembly instruction. It tells you how to position the bolt head for re-insertion. I have never had one but I assume that this works.

Yes, Flamingo & Buffalo was the store I went to.
I went to surplusrifle .com. It was OK, but didn't help my situation. The bolt head would not stay out on its own like it was supposed to.

In you comments as to how yo got it too work you mentioned using a dime or some such as a spacer. I mad a similar tool to aid in bolt removal and disassembly on my US Model 1917 (called an American Enfield by some). It is a flat washer with a slot cut in it so it looks something like the letter "C". I just drop it in in front of the cocking piece during disassembly and it works fine for getting it apart and back together again.

It has the S stamped on the barrel indicating it has been rechambered to the newer round.
What is the newer round? Whats the older one? Obviously I don't know anything about these rifles. I assume the ammo is expensive? This is a straight pull action correct? Its a nice looking weapon and a great price too!

Rick, it sounds suspiciously like you are the new owner of a blond stock M95.............:nonono:
The original cartridge was 8 x 50R, it was changed to 8 x 56R. The S on the barrel indicated the rifle was rechambered. According to web info, this started in 1931. I think my carbine was made in 1922, if I'm iterpreting the number right on the barrel. This is my first experience with the M95, and I'm just now learning about it.
The Steyr M95M is the 8mm Mauser Version.
Both of you have some really, nice M95's!!!

Yeah, Sorry dude. Looks like I got your gun. There was no hold tag on it but I thought I heard someone say that "a guy" wanted them to hold it but it was the nicest one in stock so I grabbed it. I'm kind of a regular at that store and everyone knows me so I guess they thought they were doing me a favor. Sorry again.

I don't live too far from that store. IF the DMV hadn't been a pain about my license it would have been mine that day. Oh well, no hard feelings Rick, it went to a good guy. We need a pic of it now so others can see what a nice rifle you got. I have a sling and two Nazi marked clips on order for mine.
