I tried selling this thing about a hundred times and failed. Glad I didn't because it has grown on me. I don't see many Gibbs out there anymore, and this one is a pretty good example. Oops, photo below.

That's cool. I really thought about getting a Gibbs Jungle Carbine but then they were all gone.

Thanks 97th. I also looked for the .308 version, but Gibbs must have went belly up or something, because they just disappeared about 3-4 years ago.

The .308 is what I was interested in also. Those came with a pretty neat barrel venting arrangement to reduce recoil.

Yip, with the electro-somthin or other finish too. I have only ever seen one, but like Omerta said, the prices are not favorable.

The finish was electroless nickle plating. As I recall they sold new for three hundred and something. But, I think you are right and they went belly up.

I've been searching for a #5 for a while, trying to talk a neighbor out of his.

Here is an early attempt by Navy arms at the same sort of thing.308 ATI stock,Parker Hale compensator. Had a B-square mount on it,changed it out for a proper mount.Surprisingly accurate.

Nice rifles, there was a .308 version, not sure what brand, at a
gun show I was at last month. It was pretty clean, didn't look
like it was abused, they were asking like 425 for it. I think I have
a Sterling bayonet floating around here for a jungle carbine.

I still like the No5...but I had a taste for one of the rebuilt ones in 45-70...

Yes, the 45-70 was their "mountain" rifle right? They used to have a sweet webpage with all their different models. I knew I should have bought more. Navy Arms was one of their sister companies. I remember them advertising carbines in the #5 config, #4 config, and the .308's.

The 45-70 was called the "Summit", http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting2005/kingandcountry/index.asp
I know where one is for like $350, It's been for sale for 4 years. I keep eyeing it up, but it hasn't came home with me yet :)

I have not so fond memories of shooting a surplus .303 Jungle Carbine way back in 1964. A buddy of mine's older brother had one, he paid $29.00 for it mail order. It looked brand new me (I remember the stock was the palest no grain wood I'd ever seen on a rifle, it looked like pine!) We were 13 years old and we went out and fired it in an old creek bed. I have never been kicked so hard in my life! I'd shot my Dad's 12 gauge Browning automatic and my Grandfather's old 16 gauge double barrel and a Model 94 Winchester 30-30, but that Jungle Carbine whooped my azz bad! :D

With the No5 I think it is most fun to hand load some mild loads to plink with. I know a guy who put together a No5 Look-alike in 22lr using spare parts and a barrel from a No7. Looked pretty cool to me.

I have a Gibbs extreme quest in 7.62x51 built on the Ishapore 2a 1964. This is an accurate rifle with the iron sights, will hit paper plates at 100 yards all day if you can take the pounding, Its as brutal as the real number 5 with a rubber buttpad that has turned to rock and would score high on a rockwell hardness test. :D
People love to try both at the range and because they are not expecting the recoil make great shots, but rarely want the 2nd shot, and those that do usually flinch before the boom and mess up.

Holy sh%$ Jagman, that stock on that Gibbs is incredible. That is indeed the one that we have all been referring to....gorgeous. The other carbine is nice too, but man, the search renews for a .308 barbine...........!!!

What do you call ridiculous? I gave $250 plus Transfer fee for this, this past summer. Not because of its historical correctness, but because it was mint condition and cool looking. Stiff recoil. I use a slip-on pad when shooting it.

Thats a fine looking one hoot, I have one just like it, my front sight guard was missing also (never did see a gibbs or navy arms with one) so I got a couple online for a n0.3 enfield and they fit perfect.
Heres my other Ishy with a another real jungle carbine.

Hoot, I had one just like that, I think it kicks less then the FR-8.

I have a bum shoulder from too many years shooting 200 rounds a week in Trap & Skeet competition. Had surgery on it about 10 years ago and can do just about anything with it I please, but it's sensitive to recoil. Just about all my large caliber rifles (>.22) have brakes and recoil pads on them. I had my Gibbs at the range with an FR-8 at the same time and to me, the recoil was a horse apiece. I can't imagine the recoil from one chambered for .45-70!
