Hi, all:

Hey, saw an interesting version of a Romanian AK in a local gunshop. It had a few cool things that make it quite diff cosmetically from my buddy's AK.

First, theres a weird scope mount base riveted onto the receiver on the left side. Looks like you would slide some sort of 2-pin scope mount and scope onto it and it would be a quick-mount, quick-release setup. Anybody seen these on Romanians B4? Are the mount parts available somewhere?

Second, the bbl end is threaded and has the slant break held in place with a spring loaded pin off the front sight tower (like on the Yugo UF). push in the pin, and you can unscrew it and prolly put any threaded muzzle device on in place of the slant break. With this in mind, anyone know if threading on AKs is all the same, and what is the TPI on these? I mean, will some funky AKM break or somesuch fit on there?

Also, this model had the nice forwar-curved front pistol grip.

Any help on this would be cool, thanks.

the thread is 14x1 LH thread, pretty standard for AK's. I'd say the scope mount is aftermarket or it could be a WASR made to look like a Rommy

Side mounted scope rails are standard on WASRs. You can get the rails from many different places for using on your own rifle.
ALL miitary AKs have removable muzzle brakes. The standard thread for the AK47 types is 14x1 Left Handed. The AK74 type rifle uses a multi-chambered muzzle brake. The different countries have different thread sizes they use with these, the most common is 24mm (bulgarian, russian). The romys use a 22mm thread in their ak74 series rifles

The forward pistol grip sounds like it came from a romanian "G" kit

As far as I know, they all use 14mm LH. I have one I'm holding for a fellow member and it has the FEG (Romanian) receiver with the side mounted QD scope rail. It didn't have a threaded barrel though, so it never had the indexing, spring-loaded detent installed though the sight base has the hole for one. I threaded it never-the-less and use an indexing washer to align the slant brake. The other is a Romanian made on a US receiver. That has the threaded barrel and indexing detent, but no side mounted QD scope rail. I wish my SA-85 had the scope rail, but I'm not so interested in one as to whack the rivets and install one. Too Lazy... I have two AK's I'll probably be listing in the For Sale forum soon, despite not caring for the hassle and cost of shipping them. Thought I had one spoken for, but much to my surprise, the member changed his mind. :(

EDIT shoot, two people replied while I was composing my reply... :)

You can get conversion rails that are held on by screws. They were made by the former Warsaw pact countries to add rails to weapons that were not built with optic rails.

it is this style of V-clamp one:

Also, pardon my ignorance--it was a WASR Hi-cap conversion, made in Romania.

Thanks,

Steely.

Yup... my wood WASR has the rail and the threads and everything. After the Ban died they started selling them with threaded barrels and bayonet lugs again.

I dinno if I'd put a scoped optic on it, at least nothing powerful...I'm assuming it was meant for use with some sort of CQB sight.

+1 on the PK-23. Took my Saiga-12 out today with the PK23 and made 4" groupings at 50 yards with 10 rounds rapid fire.

Awesome looking optic! And that tantal page is filled with references.
I'll have to save up, since it looks like 145USD plus $20ship. Really looks worth it, tho! K98...you got that whole pkg, mount, case, scope, instructions, for 145?

Watta deal.

I got it about three years ago for 125$.

It has been on and off the rifle dozens of times, never lost it's zero.

Also for what it's worth ,it can be used as an occluded eye sight, to reduce it's forward IF signature, Since you use these with both eys open, you just leave the front lens cap in place.Because the dot pulses, even a friend of mine that is color blind has no trouble seeing the dot.

When Kalinka sometimes has these,at around 175$,they sell out very quickly. Most folks don't know about the other place to get them.

I am going to get that new mount from DPH and get another PK-23 with the weaver mount and put on my Tantal.
