View Full Version : Jig Ii

R&D has come up with a better design on a jig. It is a little easier to use.
7651
Here it is.
7652
Here you can see the rod on the bottom. This is to push the ejection port in to place.
7653
7654
7655
Put in the flat. Ensure that the angled flat steel is in the groves on the flat.
Nice work.
I LOVE watching the ideas everyone is coming up with for improved bending!
It's neat how this design appears to do a good job of evenly pinching around the pressed in 3/4" (or so) rod.
How does it work? - much tweaking required?
Did you use a mandrel inside the flat?
Did you need to press the rails square or did you leave them round?
mojohona

7656
Insert the forming rod
7657
Start to apply pressure. Going very slowly. I repeat, very slowly.
7658
Keeping an eye on were the groves are. Make sure the flat steel stays in the grove. If it comes out, stop, release pressure, and it should pop into place. Also look closely at the way the ejection port is bowing. That is the reason for the rod welded on the bottom. To push it in place.
7659
Keep going slowly.
7660
There you have it.

7661
The other end.
7662
After remove the bent receiver. Put in the aluminum rod for heat sink to weld up the trunion end.
7663
Placement of the clamp. Then weld.

Clamp a piece of keystock in the stock end and weld.

AWESOME!! And what, just supposing, would one of these jigs run? Need to know a price...
mojohona
04-08-2008, 04:44 PM
7667
Put the dummy bolt in and press it through. With your press all the way down it still won't fit so go right next to the ram. This is if you are using a HF press or similar one. The nut on the top is to put in the slide hammer if you already have the trunion welded in. It will be in the kit.
7668
Pushing through. This pic was put in before, but was out of order.
7669
Put something on the bottom of the receiver to hold the receiver up to finish pushing through. Watch and be careful you do not deform the receiver.
This is the jig that is going out. It is on its way to you sdk. All the tools will be in there. You do not need any type of wedges or clamps on this one as the first one. So a little easier to use.

Just so everyone knows all the tools go into the kit with the bending jig. Also there will be a mandrel in the box to use if you have a bent cocking tube. Also if you have any questions just ask.

Man, mojohona, that is a slick rig, and a nice tool for the job.
Do you use a TIG welder on that, or Mig? Are you using Argon as a shield gas? what kinda wire diameter?

The mandrel is used inside the cocking tube while it is being welded, to
help prevent burn through and assist with rec. alignment. After it is
welded, thread the slidehammer into it and hammer it back out. It can
also be used to help straighten out the tube before welding. Stand the
tube upright on a block of soft wood. (use the end grain) Tap the
mandrel into the tube, then knock it back out with the slide hammer.
This should pop out small dents or an out of round shape. The mandrel is
larger dia. than the charging handle. After the mandrel is removed from
the tube, the charging handle should slide free.

Tig welder with argon.

I've been doing a bit of MIG at a buddy's but I think on the lowest setting, ti would burn rite thru the sheetmetal receiver.
I heard TIG was a lot more conducive to detail work.
Mebbe after I get in more practice...
I too could get 'jiggy' with it.

04-11-2008, 06:50 PM
Yeah , all i have is a mig....not sure if i want to try it with it, or try and befriend someone with a tig....has anyone succesfully mig'ed one of these recievers?

not sure which one of those aluminum pieces you wnted to know about so here is what it mic out to for me...
large one is 1.54"
small one is .715
now thats on my cheap digital mic but hey tis what i got.
the jig showed up last nite at UPS and had to go pick it up. on my way know to get my press back and get busy... hope to ship this to the next person on the list MONDAY so would
NSELO please send me some address info??????? will also post this at 1919 in pm to him.
Mojo has really outdone himself here and since im the first one that he shipped it to its only fair for me to cover his cost of getting it here. that will also go out Monday and then lets get this thing moving around to everybody on the list.
thanks again

I mig thin stuff all the time. fixing expansion chambers for dirt bikes, they range from 18 to 22 ga. the key to welding thin stuff with a mig is doing small tack welds every 1/4" to 1/8" then filling it in. the only drawback is there is usually a lot more slag splatter to clean up. i have a miller gas 120
i use the 2nd heat setting.
texlurch
04-12-2008, 10:38 AM
I welded my G3 with a mig, no prob at all. Use gas, not the flux wire.
sdk1968
04-12-2008, 07:11 PM
i also only have a MIG and it worked just fine.... but will have to do a little grinding to get it just perfect.
about the jig:
MOJO's JIG worked perfect and it took no time at all to bend both of my flats and tack them up.
even better was the ALuminum heat sink pieces that he added to the kit and they were a great help.
gotta brag on that tube straightener combo tool he has as well...
that thing was the berry's!!
overall this is a well thought out unit and it made my little crappy press look like a little crappy press. :icon_biggrin:
many thanks to MOJO for this and im just waiting on contact info from the next person for Monday so i can send this out.
will wait as long as MOJO wants before sending it to the next person in line...

sdk, glad it worked well for you. Were the pictures and instructions good enough? Would you add anything? Open to suggestions. I will also contact nselo. If you feel you have to send me something, please send any amount to M1 Tanker as a donation to this site. I will pm you with his address.
To everyone, this jig is heavy. Shipping is not cheap. If you can find a cheaper shipper, use them. If you feel you have to give something for the use, please donate any amount to this site. That means any amount. Just PM me for the address to send donation to. This site has helped me out alot so time to give back.
sdk1968
04-12-2008, 09:35 PM
as per MOJO's request:
my donation will be made as soon as i post this...
back to the jig:
a "good press" would be a +!! as mine is just a cheap HF... and it still turned out perfect!!
your pictures are great and plenty of instruction for the job. i did use some grease when pushing the dumy bolt thru, im not sure if you intended it to be that way but didnt figure it could hurt any. just cleaned it up good when finished.
TIP""""""" clean off any weld splatter you get on MOJO's c-clamp set up and the adjustment for the fine tuning was perfect right where he set it for the flats that i purchased from Copes. NO ADJUSTMENT WAS NEEDED!!!!
its not broke, dont fix it. LMFAO great piece of work!!

I need to stress that you have to go slow in bending these flats. One pull on the handle of the press and then look were you are at. Another pull on the handle, stop and then check were you are at. Make adjustments as you go. I do mean go slow. Stop and check often and you should have a very good flat bent into a receiver

MOJO,
have you had someone who actually messed up a flat with this set up???
the ease and speed of this jig set up will make up for any "slow pumping" yo have to do with your press!!
it really doesnt take that long, so no need to rush it...

hope you didnt mean that the way it sounded, cause it didnt sound cool at all.
if your referring to a jig other than the loaner that MOJO is so graciously supplying then you need to do it in a PM.
if you do mean the loaner that he has out there, it is getting a "tune up" after someone abused it and needed a little help.
the list for the loaner jig is huge and how long it takes is completely up to the people that use it to get it and keep it moving in a timely manner.
MOJO cant be held responsible for how long someone else takes to use it and pass it on...and some of the people using it have not been very considerate for the people behind them....
