just thought i would share.bought my mauser a few months ago, took it out a few times with open sights, and just took it out yesterday with the scope for the first time.reproduction mount and ziess scope.it shoots beautifully.
the target is the first 6 shots after boresighting with a laser.all of the unmarked shots are from the ar.

we use clay pigeons laid on the hills for targets, shot 7 hit a clay at 100 yards,
shot 8 was about 2in high at 200 yards,9 was about 2in low at 200 yards, shot 10 hit a clay at 200 yards.the last 5 shots for the day i hit 3 clays at 200 yards in 5 shots.all of this after sighting at 50 yards to start.i hope to get back to the range and get the elevation marked for the different distances.

Outside of that blued buttplate, it looks nice PGP, I wish I had a repro sniper K98 :(
Working on getting a ZF4 on my G43 though...hopefully. I can't see the scope real well, but doesn't look like a ZF41...what is it?

with serial number under this, which is low compared to what i have seen, most of the ones i have seen have been near 70000 or just under, this one is just over 16000.if you can give me info on the scope it will help.ALSO does anyone know how to make that sling look a little more aged?it just looks to new for the rest of the rifle.

I'm saying Germans did NOT blue their buttplates. You don't have to beadblast it, just put some naval jelly on there and it will eat off the bluing in just a few minutes. They should look something like this, if you are going for the original type thing.

Get me a better picture of that stock. I can tell you they aren't hard to simply clean and oil. It will NOT harm the markings, nor the value.

That looks like Russian shellac, German rifles are oil finished. Is that a crossbolt right behind the trigger? If so, its not a K98 stock, maybe some kinda VZ stock, I will have to look it up. Look between the bolt takedown disc and the buttplate on the right hand side, there should be 3 waffenamts like the picture attached if its German. They will be hard to see under the shellac.
To remove that nasty Russian shellac, just wipe the whole thing down with denatured alcohol and a piece of steel wool. It will come right off. Once its off, you can decide how to clean it. If its not bad use some pure tung oil and/or some Howard's feed and wax.

thanks for the tip.
as for the cross bolt.yes it has one, there is a crack in the stock there also, running from the rear of the receiver towards the buttplate.its about 2 inches long.
are there any other marks i can look for?
i have an H like the one you posted with what appears to be a badly worn waffenamt in front of it.
the knowledge here never ceases to amaze me.

The H is for Heer, many German Army, so yep, sounds like a K98 stock :)
What about inside the barrel channel of the stock? Any numbers?

Get that shellac off and you will be able to tell. The alcohol will not harm the wood or stain, if you have a stained stock.
