i like the finger groove grips just cause they're cheap and i can ding it up and not worry
for my 1911, i don't think it's really nice enough for a set of nice wood grips

My 1911 Rock island frame with the 2 slides I've been working on since august. They were 2 rejects from Springfield arm at camp perry during rifle championships I asked if I could bring my frame in to hand select the slides (some where really bad)...turns out they just needed some sanding, drilling and love. They need to be parked still. I got the 2 slide and a set of NM sights for ..........(drumroll) $75 HA...the rep thought it was cool A junior was working on 1911's and though it was smart of me to bring my frame in to fit the slides...The one slide is going to have the dovetails filled in so it is just stricktly a NPA gun (natural point of aim) this is what I will use in combat matches and such. Oh and you wouldnt BELIEVE the differance in hardness from the bottom frame to the one on the gun. I went through 3 drill bits to drill the firing pin hole clean through. the other one just took 1 resharpened twice.

I also installed the beaver safety and hammer. A guy in my area is a old 1911 specialist and installed the short trigger for me as well as honed the sear.

Here is my Springfield 1911 Ultra Compact I bought for CC and backpacking. The grips were made by myself out of walnut with a maple inlay.

I hate to admit it, but the only problem I've had with it was through my own ignorance. I was letting the slide fly after I manually loaded the chamber w/a round. I eventually had problems with casing extraction. I came to find that I bent the extractor. Since then I had the problem fixed and the gun functions 99.99% flawlessly.

My Colt XSE.....My favorite all around defense shooter. Not the greatest concealment gun, but a good shooter never the less. It just feels right!

My government marked 1911 made in 1914. Still looking for a front sight blade and some original grips.

My Series 80 1911A1. Recently sold. Don't know why, but everytime I would clean it, I rubbed rust off the park like it was stored in a bag of salt. Not a big fan of the plastic trigger either.

Ok, I posted pics of my 1911 on page 3 of this thread and now 1 slide is parked (the NPA slide) but the other one turned out to be high grade stainless...I really do not like the unfinished look of it on my parked frame so any thoughts on what I should do with a stainless slide? My fav color is deep dark green and I'm thinking dura coat it.

How good are the poly kimbers?

What do you mean by "good"? I can't tell any difference between a metal frame and the Kimber except the grip is thicker. I can shoot 4 inch 10 round groups at 25 meters.

Some drawbacks to this gun are:

It's hard to find a good fitting holster because the frame is a bit wider than an original 1911

You can't change the grips or add things like grip laser

Here's my one and only. I built it about a year ago on Caspian Slide, Frame, Ed Brown barrel, and various other parts from the major manufacturers. It is all I could have hoped for in a 1911. Here's the one I just saved, A 70 seris Colt. Some one had left it in a ACed glove compartment in the south Florida humidity and it rusted up bad. It wasn't in as bad of shape as the other rust bucket posted but it wasn't pretty. It's still pitted but it looks much better, now if I can get it to extract on a regular basis I'll be happy. I don't know though with my luck with semi autos lately I thik maybe I'd be better off sticking to revolvers, levers, pumps and bolt guns.

Where'd you get those finger grooves that don't cover up the wood?

Pearce makes them. They fit under any ordinary grip panels and cost only $11.00. Grip screw length can sometimes be an issue with these. It took me a while to find the what is the optimum grip arrangement for me but this is it along with the Arched MSH. For details see this link:

Is that the 1911 holster or the older one for the old 45 revolvers? My wife's great granddad kept his 45 ACP revolver from WW1 and it is still in the holster just like that one marked with his name on it.

Just wondering if they used those holsters for both.

This old war horse was re-done and featured in a magazine in the late 80's or early 90's. I acquired it from the guys son after he passed away and realized it was more of a collector piece than a shooter. He traded it to me for a LMT AR15 a few years ago. As 'toys' come and go this one is sure to stay in my collection for years. I wish I could tell you more about that enthusiast that restored it.

I have a 1932 commercial that I'll post a little later today. That piece was restored by Bill Adair to its original glory.

The holster is from WWii (I believe dated as well). My grandfather wrote all over his stuff in the same manner that LT did as well.

The WWI revolver holsters are the M1917 pattern, pretty much the same as the M1909 pattern. They were carried butt forward. The M1912 pattern "swivel" holster remained in production until 1918 or so. The M1916 holster is pictured above and was issued from 1916 until the 1980's.

Below is a picture of the M1917 (dated 1917), M1912 (dated 1916 and unit marked 10th Cav) and an M1916 (dated 1917 and unit marked 1st Div. Mule Supply Train).

You're not supposed to let it close on a round in the chamber, it should strip off the top one from the mag and load itself.

Phirebug
12-01-2007, 06:20 PM
that's why some companies have been making 1911's with external extractors. the standard 1911 extractor was not designed to close on a chambered round and you will eventually break it or wear it out. the regular extractor has to bend around the rim, an external extractor operates on a pivot point with a spring.

Well, this will be my next one, my camera blew up so I have to post product that I have bought.

I have to lap the slide to get it to go smoothly, I measured the cut and the rail, I was hung up half way back. It was the bottom of the slide, too deep to the rail/slide guid. It is still all rusty.

Here are my 45's--
Top is a Phillipine Shooter's Arms Manufacturing (SAM) Commander clone called a Blue Thunder Commodore. I have about 400 problem-free rounds through it, and it is most often my HD pistol. Excellent fixed sights, good trigger, and I like the Bobtail, extended safety and slide release ( all features I thought I wouldn't like). Got it as part of a trade two years ago.
Bottom is my Ballester Molina. I often use this for an HD pistol as well. Again, I have close to 500 rounds through it without a single malfunction. It is very tight and accurate. The arched mainspring housing seems to fit my hand well, making it a good point shooter, and the 5" barrel seems to just hang right in my hand.
One good thing about both pistols--They both came to me in trades, no paperwork, no tax, my favorite way to aquire firearms.

Here's a few of my first 1911 bought new in 1992 and the Guinea Pig for everything i learned how to do on 1911's. Never did refinish it because i was allways trying something new on it , plus i just like the look of nicely worn steel.
This gun has seen alot of different modes. Started out as a carry, then went to a bowling pin gun( hence the extra holes you see in it) it had a 40mm red dot ProPoint on it for that, then IDPA and a little bit of IPSC, and PPC.

I'm gonna be changing it again in the near future.

Some of the features are: Nice and tight slide to frame fit, Kart match barrel, Briley spherical barrel bushing, BO-Mar rearsight melted in, Raybar shotgun bead front sight, Ed Brown Wedge mainspring hsg. ( not available anymore) and all other components are Ed Brown, Flat top and serrated slide.
The only parts left that are original to the gun are the slide and the frame....

My one and only...1918 1911 with walnut grips...foolishly refinished in my youth by a not very knowledgable gunsmith...or maybe he was knowledgable and these just weren't worth as much in the 70's?!?

Glad I was able to help. I have some data on Winchester model 1917 rifles that will correlate SN to a specific date but I have not seen anything so precise for 1911 pistols. Maybe Colt can provide the data to the day (for a fee like S & W does). Anyway, that is probably a very valuable WWI 1911 that you have there.

I hadn't seen any Les Baers posted, so here's one of mine.
6" premier II, they are all CNC machined, and this one is guaranteed from the factory to shoot five shot, inch and a half groups at 50 yards. It gets boring shooting at human silhouette targets, you have to start at the center and just gradually make the hole bigger. :icon_biggrin:

this one is a pre wwii build up- RIA. Colt slide with "US ARMY" stamp and Essex frame with "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" stamp. The slide is blued and the frame is phosphated. I looked up the manufacture date a long time ago but forgot what it was. I don't care- it shoots quite well.

I like it, but as I didn't build it- got it at a gun show back about 98 for $425. The other tables were scoffing at it, so I bought it since i was looking for one. The fit is a little sloppy, but the parts are 60+ years old. I have changed the barrel to a roto4m and have put a full length recoil guide in there, which has helped. I just need to tune up a couple of things on it and it will be sweet. It is rugged and I like the fact that if I hit something with the Hydra-Shoks that I carry for defense, I have a 94% chance according to FBI tables of stopping the argument in one shot!

Here are some pictures of my Singer Colt. It was refurbished after WWII and was issued for the Korean War. I got it from the estate of the GI who brought it home from Korea. The originally blued slide has been parkerized during the refurbishment after the war. The receiver is not Singer made but is a Colt frame. During the refurbishment, no attempt was made to match receivers with slides, hence the mismatch.

I lose interest when you have to snowshoe to the range, if it's nessasary I can live in a snowbank, but, right now it's indoor practice sessions. Though right now with the country going the way it's going I may have to change that to live fire practices.

last week. While I was arranging to have the Delta Elite transferred the shop pointed me to a gentleman who had this:

http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/albums/EBR/colt_super_1.jpg

Colt Blue Series 70 Mk IV Government .38 Super. New, in the box; unfired.... Although the box is well worn (1980 - 81 gun) the gun is in almost identical condition as the Delta Elite. It probably could well be unfired other then in at the factory...I got it with everything that came with it when it was purchased back when it was new...

I thought I was going to take it easy on gun purchases this year (getting married next month) but I guess I'm failing miserably at that. So far this year I have bought the following:

Colt Series 80 Mk IV Combat Elite enhanced (used)
Colt Model 1908 Pocket Auto .25 acp (used)
Colt Combat Commander Lightweight .38 Super (used)
Smith and Wesson 1911PD, Commander sized, scandium frame (NIB)
Ruger Super Blackhawk, blued, 7-1/2" barrel .44 Magnum (used)
Colt Series 70 Mk IV Government blued .38 Super
Colt Series 89 Mk IV Government Delta Elite SS 10 mm
Schultz and Larsen M70 .22 lr single shot bull barreled target rifle

Good luck with it...

Hopefully I'm not reading into this too much... but... I've read up on some of the problems people have had with kimbers. Several folks in my family own one, and have zero problems with them and would swear by them.

That just leads me to believe the crowd who has experienced issues is far louder on the internet than the folks who are happy with theirs. I always read about FTF's and other malfunctions when they are straight out of the box. Mine has eaten its first 200 rounds flawlessly. I'm happy with it so far!

Old Jimmy

I am not knocking Kimbers at all and would buy another if the chance came up on a good deal, I have friends that have Kimbers and I have shot theirs and they ran flawless.

I didnt know about the match cut chambers when they first came out so mine had feeding problems with cheaper ammo so I sold it before I knew what the problem was,I think it was Blazer ammo I was shooting so mine was probably catching the soft aluminum lip on the cases on the sharp edge of the chamber.

Just keep in mind they Operator's II grips like I have are very grippy. I was OCing with that gun the other day and it felt like I was going to rub a hole in my arm from brushing over it while just walking... might take some super-fine sandpaper and knock down the dimpled front portion actually.

I think the 1911 was one of my first loves in the firearms world. Unfortunately, I havent gotten around to purchasing a "proper" 1911 yet..

I do, however, have this to offer!

behind the blur is my LAR Grizzly MkV 50.ae

Short answer "not sure". It's WWI late production.

Part of a collection of WWI and WWII the came my way via a Great Uncle who served in both wars.

I picked up a new 1911-A1 over the Holidays. It's a Regent Just too good of a buy to pass up.

I’ve only added a set Wilson Grips not sure if I will do anything else---I kinda like the old combat look of it (simple but nice).

I have fired over 300 rounds through it so far, all reloads—about 5 different case manufactures. It only choked on one brand the other went through flawlessly without a jam. This gun shoots nice and really is a good value.
I also used three different mags---once again no problems what so ever.

No one should be without a good 1911, and here is mine, a Kimber Royal. It has run perfect right out the box with fmj or hollowpoints, and groups very tight @ 25 yds.

NICE! I figured I'd be the only one posting a picture of a Grizzly Win Mag. Then you show up with TWO of 'em. The only "one-up" I have on you is that I've visited the LAR Grizzly shop -where these were made all those years ago. It's about 20 minutes from where I work. Those are a couple of clean looking guns, especially giving their age!

Well Oz that is a one up for sure! The closest I came was talking to them on the phone when I had the first one built, then I found the second at Cabelas, go figure. And I picked up a new in the box 10mm conversion kit on gunbrokers.com . There is one kit that is super rare that I seem to remember it was a 9mm mag and the 50AE but I believe that doesn't fit te GrizzlyV. I bought it originally to hunt hogs with my dad, then he past away and most i've done is hunt whitetail with it! I even bought the lefthand leather shoulder holster that they offered. So, I guess I have a soft spot for Grizzlies, and gunbrokers often has Grizzlies on auction. Take care Bro! Steve

This is my favorite off-duty carry 1911 variation; it is a Detonics MKVI Professional .45. Call it the original sub-compact 1911; the intent of moving the rear sight forward like it is was to carry the gun with the hammer down on a loaded chamber and cock the hammer on the draw. That means you'd have to drop the hammer on a loaded chamber; not a really safe thing to do. With the grip safety and the slide lock safety, it is just as safe as any other 1911 with the same safeties.

I counted them the other day; I have 26 1911 type pistols; including three .38 Supers, one .22 lr, one Colt .22 lr conversion slide/barrel combo, one 9mm 1911, one 10mm; the rest are .45 acp. Love them 1911s.

I sent 2 Commander sized 1911s (Colt Combat Commander and a Charles Daly/Bul M5 hi-cap poly frame steel framed pistol) to David Sams, a gunsmith in Virginia for a well deserved overhaul for the Colt and for the M5, to make it function as it should...photos and range reports will follow when they return.

Picked up my first 1911 on Friday: A Regent R100 1911a1 manufactured in Turkey by the Trabzon Gun Industry Corp and imported by Umarex. I went into the store wanting to get a Springfield Armory GI model, but they were on backorder, and this one was about $200 cheaper anyway. Feels pretty solid for such a cheap gun. I can't wait to get her to the range.

Mmmmmmm Para Super Hawg. Single stack is a bit rare these days.

So is the Nite Tac SSP. You see alot of the SSPs, but you don't see very many SSP Nite Tac models with the light rail frame. It is an older gun they produced a few years back.

I had the option to get either the double or single stack Superhawg, and went with the single. The main reason was the mags. I could use the existing mags I had, and had heard bad reviews of the factory mags. It has been completly deMIMed with the exception of the front sight. I also sleeved the slide to be able to use a regular extractor. It has been worked over by me and it is super smooth and one of my favorite guns to take out.
