I believe its a Chinese. People that reported that crest also found a backwards swastica. Here is where i found the info, just a google search: http://oldguns.net/q&a9_05.htm

I can't help but I wanted you to know that you've made me feel better. At least now I know I am not the only one to have purchased a weapon and not know what it was for sure.

Kevin, if it is chinese, do some research on that rifle, there were some chinese built mauser copies that the chinese wouldn't even shoot when new, for fear of them comeing apart. Make sure you get a good idenity on which chinese arsnal or which country made the rifle for them. Just my two cents on that, I think there are some chinese rifles that may just be unsafe to shoot no matter what.

Kevin, here are links to wikipedia on some chinese bolt action rifles of the pre WWII era.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiang_Kai-Shek_rifle, a chinese made mauser 98 variant,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanyang_88 , a chinese made earler copy of the 88 commission rifle.
I would use these as maybe search starting points for better referances for the rifle as the unknown accuracy of the stuff at wikipedia.
I think this is only if your rifle is chinese too. Good luck, and be careful in shooting these.

Can you post a photo of the entire rifle? If it is Chinese it would be a nice addition to your collection even if you don't shoot it. How many Chinese copys do you see floating around out there? Few if not none, I would say.

its a strait bolt rifle with finger grooves in the stock but the same length as a regular k98
it would look just like a k98k if the bolt was bent down
the rifle looks just like this: http://album.sina.com.cn/pic/447bb7ba020001yt
