i know we had an occupational thread here before, but I'm wondering who here is, was or plans to be a Law Enforcement Officer. Right now, I'm working as a civilian employee to the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. and after college, I plan on joining the force. The internship has been a fantastic experience, and has solidified my want to be a police officer.

And that was quite enough. I was a Deputy Sheriff, Chief Deputy Sheriff, and then a Chief of Police in Eastern Nebraska, 1976 -1992. I wouldn't discourage anyone from giving it a try as it was a good experience for me, but it's a thankless job and much more dangerous than it used to be. Go for it!

22 years here in Florida, been through the gamut: County Corrections, County Deputy Sheriff, State LEO (NOT FHP!), currently a Sergeant with the County - I highly recommend it to the young people out there, get in early and take advantage of a good retirment at an early age. I'm 50 (damn, how did that happen?) and was able to retire 2 years ago, but I'm hanging in there having too much fun!
Especially if you like the toys - OC Spray. Tasers (or ECW as they want it called) Less Than Leathal Weapons, Glocks, Colt Carbines and Semi-Auto Shotguns! When I started speed loaders for the S&W 66 was high tech!
OMG I'm rambling on again about the good 'ol days!!

I work weekends at our college department. Sort of in between security and police, but still covering both. No plans to do it after school, but it's a nice back up.

I was a military policeman for 5 years (the 2nd half of my time in service). I was a sworn reserve officer for the podunk town I lived in NC (1 FT officer and the Chief )
I don't talk about my current job on the web, but I work for a LE support agency. I was a sworn officer with this agency, until my position was civilianized a couple of years ago.
/PM me for details if you are really interested.
//mmmmm DC Metro, three times the inservice, half the pay.
(I realized I confuzed Metropolitan and Metro Transit Authority)

MPD has some great benefits and its starting salary is the highest for city cops on the eastern seaboard. retirement in 20 years.... they've convinced me.

I was a rent-a-cop in my last year of college, at a slaughterhouse. It was...an interesting job. 6000 hogs slaughtered a day produce an inordinate amount of blood.
I'm to civilly disobedient to be an LEO. I do have a few good cop-evasion stories!

haha, yea, deffinatly dont give a hoot about becoming a subway cop... that would be..... not great, infact, that wouldnt be on the list even. na, DC police (the general police) is called Metropolitan Police, sorta like London is Metropolitan Police.

Cool, we need good God fearing police these days that have read the constitution.
I pray for all you police out there, it is a thankless job and it sometimes takes a lot out of you.
:America:God bless our law enforcement.

I was in law enforcement for a few years. I worked Traffic Homicide, Special Response Team, Traffic Unit and Patrol Supervisor.
It was great when I was single, but my heart wasn't in it after I married and started having kids. I think it was mostly the rotating 8 hour shifts (rotated every four weeks). They went to twelves shortly after I left. If I had known they would, I would have probably stayed (for a while at least).
Since then, my standards lapsed and I wished I had kept them up. Not that I want to go back, but just to know that I could.
It was definately a good experience for me.

Ten years on the job in southeastern NC this past Febuary. I am moving to the Raleigh triangle area soon because my wife has been transfered though. Now I have to find a new department to work for, and more people to go shooting with. Anyone here live in the triangle area that can let me know of some nice places to go shooting.

John I live in New Bern but work in Raleigh. There are a couple of good places to shoot there. Sir Walter Raleigh gun club is probably the nicest.

BINGO! You have it right my friend. I love my work, but I have the soon to be wife to think about. Shift work is killer on a relationship, however I don't sleep as much now; 4-5 hours of sleep just to spend time with her.

24 years Deputy Sheriff in Austin. Worked Corrections (9 months), Patrol, Traffic (motors), Training (8 years), currently a Detective. Love my job but occasionally hate the politics. I've been here too long for them to mess with me but I see yournger officers get jacked with. Admin types quickly forget where they came from and hold officers to standards that would have cost THEM their jobs many times over.

Retired after 29 years with Seattle PD, Patrol, Street Squad (we call Anti Crime Team), Narcotics, Juvenile Unit, Mountian Bike Squad, Burglary Theft Detail and finally Inspection and Audit. I also did 3 years prior of smaller departments. All I can say is, do it as long as you enjoy it. When you no longer look forward to going to work, find a change. Either in police work or out. The job can destroy familys and your life if you don't pay attention. Always remember, there is like outside of police work!

Wrasslin' Skunks on a full-time basis has a tendency to take it out of ya. There seems to be no end to it. I salute you, Sir! Good advice for the youngsters among us, I think...
