First off, Range Report!

I took it to the range to test out overall function and sight in the scope. Everything went fine, but I brought the wrong mags, so it kept jamming up every once in a while. The recoil was slightly better than last time, but I was getting sick of cocking it, and I couldn't get it sighted in, so I called it a day and put a couple mags through the PPK.

I got my brushes from E&L, so I figured I'd give it a scrubbing. Here's where the fun begins. After the teardown, I tilted the receiver around to peek down the barrel and caught the hint of brass. 'Oh hell' I thought to myself, 'I've got a split case neck'. I couldn't smack it out with my regular cleaning rod, so I tried the E&L knurled rod. A few good hits with the cleaning rod as an extension, I managed to knock out what looked like a case neck at first, but on closer inspection... it's a frickin jacket. A copper jacket.

A... COPPER... JACKET.

I'm not quite sure how that happened, but needless to say I've got a load of inspection to do now. Something ain't quite right, so BG is now pretty low on the list of priorities. Oh, and I'll get a picture of this thing up right quick.

Okay, picture time. Notice the ring where it wedged in. The left side would be the point of the bullet.

I glad you didnt send another down the barrel, thats for sure. So its just the jacket? The lead/steel core is gone, huh. Weird.

Yeah, apparantly the core ripped right through the jacket. Totally odd. Last one of the mag, last mag before I put it away. Serious luck.

I'm beginning to think I probably should... I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary either on that shot. Normal recoil, normal smoke discharge, bolt closed fully. I think if there had been another round, it probably wouldn't have chambered since the jacket was pretty rammed in there and a heck of a lot bigger than the barrel for some reason.

Either I'm being looked after, or this is a sign I might not be one with the CETME yet.

What ammo were you using? Maybe if the bullet was seated way long, and in the lands, the jacket could be seized in the lands and the core could separate on ignition. Damn thats just odd.

Headstamp LC 98 (+)

Lake City tracer round at the tail end of the mag. It was supposed to tell me I ran out, but I never saw the flare, so I figured I'd grabbed the non tracer one. Everything else was Paki surplus. Even more odd that it was an LC rather than the Paki.

Abnormal loading from the tight mags maybe? I still don't have a clue on this one.

I bet it was old tracer ammo... typical surplus whether paki or not shouldnt have that problem.

I dont know exactly whats different about tracer ammo, but that sounds too coincidental to not say that was the problem.

Id definitely be careful shooting that tracer ammo again... maybe check the bore or chamber after you fire each one...

I imagine the problem with most of the traced ammo out there that it has been reloaded or remanufactured. I don't think you could even buy an LC marked traced round now. Thus some one took pulled traced projectiles, and maybe pulled LC cases and reseated the projectiles. Thus maybe cut thur the cladding on the recrimp which allowed the back half of the jacket to hang while the center acclerated thus slideing out of the remains of the jacket.

Doesn't look reloaded in any way. No extractor marks on the case whatsoever. I'd say it's probably original. By the looks of the jacket, it misloaded at an angle and that's why it jammed, but that's just what I've got to look at. Could still be anything. I've only got one of the tracers left, so I'll save it till I've excluded everything else. In the mean time, I'll stick to my Mauser, it's much easier to diagnose problems on.

Oh, forgot to mention that one. RC 1898 Mauser Karabiner from 1938. Awesome rifle. All the marks still exist with the traditional Russian inventory stamp on the stock. Non matching bolt, but all the waffens are clear as day. A finer shooter there never was.
