Well, duh...if gun free zones don't shop shootings, and Stop signs don't stop cars, how will cameras stop crime?
CCTV boom has failed to slash crime, say police
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2008/may/06/ukcrime1
"Massive investment in CCTV cameras to prevent crime in the UK has failed to have a significant impact, despite billions of pounds spent on the new technology, a senior police officer piloting a new database has warned. Only 3% of street robberies in London were solved using CCTV images, despite the fact that Britain has more security cameras than any other country in Europe."

of course that wont stop crime. community policeing will. put a cop on every corner and crime will go down.... somewhat. but i dont want a cop on every corner, i dont mind him walking by and all, but comeon, how can a camera stop a crime currently happenning, police wont respond in time. i'm a supporter of community policing, let the cops interact with the community, its had good results, and helps lower crime.

we're working on it here in dallas, turbo. every intersection has cameras, supposedly for ticketing red light violators. havent heard of ANYONE being ticketed for running a red light with one of these things.
waste of tax money...or is it? "Violate them slowly but surely with their own money!"

This is the fundamental problem with our country.
The Police come while the crime is in progress, has been completed or the body starts to stink. The Police come to clean up the trash, thats why they are the Police and not the Preventors. Sure, they would love to catch every bad guy and stop every crime, hence the cameras, but its not possible.
We need empowered citizens in this country, but instead we have law abiding citizens who would get sued when they try to help stop or prevent a crime. Go figure.
Im with ya CT on community policing, we called it the surge in Iraq :) There is no substitue to boots on the ground.

actually, my best friend got a ticket from one of those intersection camera thingies when we were driving around Dallas about 9 months ago. he got a ticket in the mail along with a picture of him going through the intersection.
so yes, they do work.

Those cameras are not there to stop crime. They are there for a revenue source. I agree with ctdemolay0405. I think if they realy wanted to stop crime they would take that money, and use it in other areas.

You guys all missed it. Those cameras re not there to catch criminals, they are there to get you used to seeing cameras everywhere. Soon, there will be many times more cameras in many more places and your eyeballs will be scanned, you will be greeted by name by computers, and you will have no secrets. :tinhat:

i've had every police officer i've ever talked about guns with tell me, as soon as its legal, get a weapon, and carry it wherever you legally can. It is the greatest and only equalizer of force. and the police will never arrive on time

Years ago, when Oklahoma was considering a CHL (which they eventually enacted), a police officer told me he was in favor of it, "...because everyone who wants to kill me is carrying a gun already. This way, some of the people who want to help me can have guns too."

that's a great quote, I'll have to remember that one next time someone tries to debate the merits of CCL
