Does anyone have any experience fitting a Pachmayr Decelerator pad to a CETME wooden buttstock? I think this would be a great addition to the one I am building....but wanted some imput.

I just got my wood furniture in today for my CETME and I have no buttpad and was looking for some info as well. Glad you put a thread up.

Not hard to fit a pachmayer or anyone elses pad on to a wood stock just make sure you are ready for the mess you will make. First find the SMALLEST pad you can that will fit the butt stock as there will be less grinding. Then you have to square up the back of the butt stock and remove that part of the wood where the old hard rubber pad fit. Use a wide belt grinder for this so you can keep the back flat, even, and square. When you have this done, mark the holes for the pad and drill the new screw holes in the wood and attach the pad. Now here is where it gets hard. You are going to have to put a layer of masking tape around the stock to protect the wood and also to use as a guide and grind down the pad keeping the sides flat like the stock and rounding the top and bottom and keeping the lines straight so the pad doesn't come out lop sided as this is easy to do.
You can also take an ice pick and score an outline of the stock on the pad and then grind down to the outline, but I have found without a pad jig, this is a harder way to go, at least for me. Wear safety glasses and a dust mask as you are going to get rubber everywhere, but especially all over you.
Not hard to do after you catch on but I recommend that you go to a gun shop that has a smith and buy a couple of used pads first and practice on these as they are a lot cheaper. Take in your stock and explain what you are wanting to do and he might just take pity on you and do the labor for free if you buy the pad from him.
Having done grind-to-fit pads on a CETME and G3 stock, the biggest PITA is the hole for the stock retaining bolt is where one of most buttpad mounting holes want to be. I found a large threaded brass pipe plug that tapped it's way into that hole. in the center of that plug, I drilled and tapped a hole directly in line with the pre-drilled pad mounting hole. An easy 1/2 hour fix and most of that time was thinking of it and driving to the hardware store to get the plug. weasel_master has it. Ask him how it turned out.

Edit: The brass plug easily screws in and out in case you have to remove the stock, or simply want to snug it up. I got a picture of it somewhere. I take pictures of all unique things I've done for the CETME for posterity's sake.

If you can find one, the mars copy pad might serve you well, and have no fitting issues, or even a new cetme"c" reproduction pad with fresh rubber.

I'll get you pictures of Hoot's setup when I get home from school. I'll try to remember anyways.

Wild Bill has soft rubber pads that look just like the hard rubber or plastic ones that came with Tapco furniture sets. That is what I used. It looks just like the original but much more comfortable and certainly less hassle then fitting a civilian pad. They only fit CETME wood. You can find them at:

For all the hassle with a grind-to-fit, looking at Wild Bill's site, the pad he sells sure looks worthwhile. It won't add much to the length of pull though, if you were looking to improve that aspect. That's why I went with the longer G3 stock on my CETME. That and the thicker grind-to-fit pad made a big difference for my physique.
