Hey guys, father's day is coming up and dad really would love to have a 30-40 krag... found a couple near home, but one was carbine, and the other freaking outrageously priced...

If anybody knows where I might find one, especially in NC let me know.

Well first, are you looking for a shooter or a rack grade rifle? The quality of the rifle really determines price. A decent one will most likely be, I don't know, around $600 most likely. If you have a gander mountain around you, sometimes they do buy one or two from people looking to sell them. Also, the CMP might help you.

just looking something for shooting, doesn't have to be in amazing shape...

the two i found varied greatly... one was a carbine, nice looking stock, a little pitting, but overall nice looking and shootable, for 330... which I though was excellent, but when I took dad to see it he didn't like the carbine, he wanted a full size

the standard one I saw looked much worse, stock was all banged up and so was the metal, bolt was nice, but thats about it... and it was marked at 1k..

I'll check out CMP, hadn't really thought about that.

yeah, according to their website, they do have some now (not sure if they've updated it though). They're under misc. rifle items. Heres what they have to say:

MKRAGX - KRAG .30 -.40. This grade Krag is basically complete, but may be missing firing pin, stacking swivels, some screws or other small parts. Metal finish is worn. Wood will have dings, dents and gouges, but stock will be sound with no cracks. Barrel may be tack-welded to receiver, but barrel is not plugged. Barrel is shot out and in the black. Rifle may or may not headspace and is considered unsafe to fire. Only 343 in stock. $450.00. All sales are final. No exchanges or refunds.

MKRAGY - KRAG .30 -.40. This grade Krag is basically complete, but may be missing firing pin, sights, stacking swivels, some screws or other small parts. Metal finish is worn. Wood will have dings, dents and gouges, and stock may have some cracks. Barrel may be tack-welded to receiver, but barrel is not plugged. Barrel is shot out and in the black. Bolt face may be welded. Rifle may or may not headspace and is considered unsafe to fire. Only 298 in stock. $350.00. All sales are final. No exchanges or refunds.

MKRAGBR - KRAG .30 -.40. Bad barreled receiver only. Does not include sights, trigger group, bolt, stock, or any other parts. Metal finish is worn. Barrel may be tack-welded to receiver, but barrel is not plugged. Barrel is shot out and in the black. Only 95 in stock. $150.00. All sales are final. No exchanges or refunds.

Looks like you're going to need one hell of a gunsmith to fix those rifles however. You should try to convince your dad into liking an M1 Garand or an Enfield  something a little more accessible. The Krag's will be hard to find in good condition, but if you get ambitious, you could fix up one of the CMP rifles decently. The stocks and furniture won't be too hard to fix/replace; but the barrel might have some issues. I'm not really sure what they mean when they're talking about the barrel cond. but it dosn't sound too friendly! Good Luck!

Tried to push him toward something else this weekend when we went out searching.... He wants a krag basically because his grandfather had one and its the first thing he ever let him shoot (other than .22's). I may end up getting him something entirely different for fathers day and keep searching till I find a good krag. He loves our Enfields, but has never shot a garand... I'd hate to get him a garand though since he knows its very high priority on my list of wants... He'd think I bought a gift for me haha...

You might look at an 03' Springfield. They're pretty close in resemblance, (besides the magazine placements). Or, try posting in the "bolt action," section which most likely gets more hits. Ask around if anyone has one they want to get rid of; I know for sure they're out there. But like you said, it may take some time. Like me trying to track down a lefthanded magnum R700 tactical stock. No one seems to inlet those (I'm still looking, but I know I'll find one). But if you have fleamarkets or antique shops in your area, try those places. Around here, I've seen all kinds of surplus rifles for sale. I cannot remember if one was a krag, but there probably were a few in the mix. Just be careful you don't get taken; know how much to pay cause I've been screwed before at those places.
