I'm an old man with a bad memory.I've got a couple questions for you fellas with an alert mind....Was there a Vietnam era belt fed machine gun that would feed from either side ? Also I remember breaking down belts to get ammo for a BAR. I think every 7th round was a tracer,I left them out because I did not like tracers. Now I fella tells me every so many rounds was armor piercing,I don't recall anything else but tracers but were some of them armor piercing ? And those GE guns on the AC47,what were they first used on ? Were they all 7.62x51 ? The man that put that unit together got a lot of us home. Also I think a 50 had to be racked two times to fire,is that correct ? You know how things get on your mind and you can't remember the answer ? Well, this is a few I have.....hope you guys can give me a couple answers.

The Stoner 63 (Mk 23 Mod 0) was able to feed from left or right. The original belts for the 1919 (steel links) that I have were linked 5 AP to 1 tracer. do not have any '06 belts with ball ammo.
I thought racking 2x applied to the first round on a new link belt. The first rack delinked the first round and the second rack chambered it/ delinked the second round.

Only time I ever saw a 50 racked twice was when loading a new belt.

The beltfed gun you're referring to sounds like an M37. Which is a 1919a4, but feeds from either side. Only gun I can think of that does that, that can also have ammo taken to be used in a BAR.

I believe that's it.We didn't know the different models...just how to clean and operate.
As for the 50 that was the 2 racks when loading a fresh belt.

Correct on Ma Duece, gotta rack it twice on a fresh belt. I'm too young for the other stuff though.

From what my father told me in a conversation we had about those GE miniguns.
The Kiowa scout copters had them ,and the AC119. were he first he had seen them.
We got into the conversation because he was telling me, about when his division got a few to switch out from the m-60s the door gunners were previously using.

I never saw one of the miniguns.I heard them and saw them firing down but never got close to one.I reckon they all fired 7.62x51.

You can convert a .50 to feed from the other side. I think all you do is install the part in the bolt the other way, and load your belt from the other side. I am a little rusty on actually doing it, but I do know it can be done.
