View Full Version : Enfield No4 Mk1 Two Groove Barrel?

So, I have been looking into a bolt action rifle as some of you know. I have narrowed myself down to SMLE's, and have been researching them a bit. I have found a couple for my T&E, but have seen some No4's with 2 groove barrels. I was wondering what is the deal? All the rifles I have ever been around have had more than two grooves. Also would the twist rate compare to a 6, or 7 groove barrel? Any insight, TIA

my longbranch no.4 has 2 grooves, but it shoots just fine. i'd take photos of it but i'm currently overseas and won't be back till later. i think some 03a3's had 2 grooves too

Two grooves was a wartime expedient. Getting the rifles made faster was important and testing show no significant loss in accuracy with two grooves. Twist rate should be the same.

The US I believe did the same on the springfields too. Again upped production rates

My springfield has 2 grooves and is very accurate. So is one of my enfields.

I read some where that they also used some two groove barrels to m1's too(the general thought was as replacements), you read about them popping up from time to time.
