A troll is someone who posts derogatory or otherwise inflammatory messages about sensitive topics in an established online community such as an online discussion forum to bait users into responding.

Isn't the whole point of posting to a forum such as this to get people to respond?
Given that, what is considered derogatory or inflammatory? Posting here about your latest firearm acquisition is considered on topic, but may be considered "trolling" in a PETA forum, for example.
I frequent a farm tractor related forum that bans all discussion involving politics or religion. That's fine with me as those subjects definately don't belong there.
Are there any topics that are forbidden here?

Right out of the rules:
1. No Trolling
2. No Flaming
3. No discussion about how to do something illegal.
4. No discussion condoning something dangerous.
5. No pornogrophy
6. No spamming
An example of trolling would be posting on a For Sale post that the item for sale is junk, overpriced, broken, etc... Or if you posted how great you thought your local police department was after they stopped a buglary and someone chimed in that all police officers suck, are criminals, etc...
Its ok to disagree and discuss, thats what a forum is about. Its not ok to troll.

Trolling would be like an anti-gunner posting their trash talk here.

WTF? What about my home?
Wait... Under "the bridge"....the Mackinac Bridge...is where trolls live....
I can translate Yooper and some Canukistani...they are very similar.
Besides the fishing metaphor, in some circles, trolling is associated with the surly person who makes you answer questions before you can gain acceptance in a clique. Some times the questions are legitimate and some times they are rhetorical "No Win" questions more intent on exclusion then inclusion.
BTW Do you still shoot Indian ammo?

from Urbandictionary.com.... definitions of "troll"
1. troll 1232 up, 86 down
One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument
2. troll 453 up, 78 down
One who purposely and deliberately (that purpose usually being self-amusement) starts an argument in a manner which attacks others on a forum without in any way listening to the arguments proposed by his or her peers. He will spark of such an argument via the use of ad hominem attacks (i.e. 'you're nothing but a fanboy' is a popular phrase) with no substance or relevence to back them up as well as straw man arguments, which he uses to simply avoid addressing the essence of the issue.
3. troll 357 up, 66 down
1. A large, brutish creature of European myth, often lacking in intelligence. Sometimes compared to the Japanese oni.
2. A dumbass who makes idiotic posts in message boards newsgroups for the sole purpose of pissing people off, often lacking in intelligence. Sometimes compared to people who pass you by on the sidewalk then grab you in inappropriate places.
I always thought it was a person who was trying to get business, and disguising him/herself as a normal Joe Blow, and would shamelessly plug his or her company..... like if someone here was a major operator of Tapco, and posted links to Tapco in any and all messages of someone asking a question about something... But I found out a while back that its more of just a person who likes to argue for the sake of arguing, or just really someone who likes to be disagreeable.
Anybody remember that guy on the old forum who was running around everywhere telling everyone that grinding bolts was an acceptable way to get bolt gap? And then when he got kicked off of cetmerifles.com, he went to other forums to post badly about all of us there? That guy was a troll if theres ever been a troll. I think he fit the bill better than anyone else could have.

forgot to add... the reason for calling these people trolls or calling the action trolling is that it applies to the style of fishing where you drop a line and lure in the water and move about hoping for a bite. A troll goes around just trying to get a rise out of members....... drops a line and hopes for a bite... get it?
