I was at the range today and the guy next to me had an M1 that he had picked up at the CMP Northstore earlier in the day He had cleaned it and was firing it for the first time. Everytime that he got to the fourth round the rifle ejected the half empty mag and all the remaining unfired rounds. I imagine that it has something to do with the clip latch but I don't know much about that function because I have never had a problem with one.

He was firing the Greek Surplus ammo that CMP sells. It comes preloaded into 8-round Garand clips and every clip behaved exactly the same way. I have fired quantities of the very same ammo with no problems at any time.

What might be causing his problem? What is usually done to correct it? Should he take the rifle back to the CMP Northstore or get it fixed by a gunsmith? I did give him the name of a top notch gunsmith who knows Garands very well and works as an armorer at Camp Perry during the matches.

It needs a new clip latch and spring. Fulton Armory sells heavy duty springs and they work very well. Put them in both of my Garands.

Either that, or just re-spring the entire rifle. I bought a bunch of replacement springs from Orion and installed them in my shooters.

I actualy did the same thing. The springs are cheap and make a big difference.
