I've always wanted a K98. I see them advertised all the time. But I dont know what a capture screw is. Hopfully its not what it sounds like. Can someone help me out with this?

I believe you are referring to a screw on the trigger guard assemby. That screw's job is to keep the screws that hold the receiver in the stock from backing out.

Cbear is 100% correct. Two screws hold the trigger guard in place and 2 capture screws hold them in place. The I/O reproductions are so incorrect they don't work. Russian capture rifles sometimes have them and sometimes do not have them.

I got two screws fron Tennessee Gun parts. It is $6 a set, there is a $10 minumum order. #M98-21. They are well made and fit my RC K98 perfectly. http://www.tngunparts.com/mauser.htm.

So if I was to get a reproduction, as opposed to finding an original, would the capture screws actually serve a purpose,or would it be to make it as authentic as possible?

Provided you have a threaded hole for them and the proper base screws, yes, they would. They serve to keep the base screws in place, to prevent them from backing out while firing.
Also, make sure you check everything over. My first one had a very worn action, as it was a Yugo capture, and had been used for the better part of a half century. Go for a Russian capture. They tend to be barely used and in great shape.
