i don't know a lot about 9mm. i carry a beretta here in iraq, i have it loaded with 9x19. several years ago i owned a glock that was 9x18 i think. i now have a p95 i got in a trade w/ one of the members here and it is stamped 9x23. i have seen 9x21 listed in ammo advertisements, then there is 9mm luger. my question is what is the difference between these and are any of them interchangable for example .38 can be shot through a .357? thanks.

The "x19" refers to case length. Since most autos headspace on the case mouth, you pretty much have to use the proper ammo. A 9x23, for example, will be too long to allow the slide to close fully--it probably won't fit in the magazine, either.
9x18 is the makarov caliber. Your glock was 9x19, I'm sure.
Good luck over there, and thanks for your service.

9x17 is known in the US as .380 ACP and in Europe as '9mm kurz/corto (short)'
9x18 is known as 9mm Makarov, and also 9mm Ultra. This is the standard soviet pistol/submachine gun round.
9x19 is known as 9mm Luger in the US and 9mm Parabellum in Europe. This is the most commonly seen "9mm" in the West.
9x23 is known as 9mm Super. Designed for competition
9x23 also is the dimensions of 9mm Largo and 9mm Steyr. None are advised to be used interchangeably.
9x33 is known as 9mm Magnum. Not very well known, was used most recently in the AutoMag III from AMT (years past)

thanks for clearing that up for me. i'll look for some 9x23 for my ruger when i get home and give it a try. if it cost more than my .45 to shoot than i will probably get rid of it. it is a nice feeling pistol in the hand though. thanks again for the info.

Can you post pictures of your Ruger? I live in a dark cave and have never heard of one being chambered in 9x23.

It is not unusual for a blowback weapon like a sten to bulge cases. Maybe a new recoil spring is needed?

380 is also called 9MM Browning.
I have 2000 rnds of it and no 380 to shoot it with :(
Need to convert a 9mm Glock to 380 :) but want a STAR in 380.

Turbo, is your sten a class3 or is it a semi conversion with closed bolt? if it is closed bolt, it sounds like excessive headspace, and if it is class 3 open bolt, it sounds like the round is going off before entering full battery.

Sorry, I'm a necromancer.
9 x 18 - 9mm Mak/Makarov - 9mm PM (Pistole Makarow) - also known as 9.2mm PM etc.
AFAIK there were only two SMGs in 9mm Mak, the Czech Scorpion and the Polish PM-63.
9 mm Police - 9 mm Ultra - 9 × 18 mm Ultra - 9 × 18 mm Police. It's a completely different and much older animal than the Makarov cartridge.
