I got a Turkish M38 when SOG had'em on sale for 50 somthing bucks. I stripped the stock and re-did the metal with gun kote. The color did turn out like I wanted so I will most likley strip it and cold blue it.

I used some arosol stripper on the stock then put one coat of natural color minwax stain. I'm gonna tear it apart again this week, take the gun kote off & find some cold blue to do the metal. Anybody got a sugjestion for a good type of cold blue? I have used the stuff that comes in a blue bottle(can't remeber the name but they always have it @ wallyworld) on a shotgun with semi-satisfactory results. It kinda streaked & did not get as dark as I wanted. I was hoping somone might know of some cold blue that goes on even & will give a darker deeper finish.

Go to Brownell's and get the Oxpho-Blue in the cream. It will give you the finish that you are looking for on the rifle and is almost as tough as a Hot Salt blue. Not a black color, but more of a blue/black like the old days.

Yeah, Cimmkid, thats what I was look'n for. I really don't want it to look new. The only reason I refinished it in the first place was cause the front sight band broke & I had to solder it back together. After soldering, the muzzel looked like I had been using it to roast marshmellows & hotdogs. After putting the gunkote on it looked like it had been spaypainted. If it had been a different gun I could have lived with it but on an old mauser it just looked too bubba for me.

Nice rifle pigpen, it looks great, You did a fine job getting it back in shape.
I should have bought one back then. Also thanks for the tip on the Oxpho-Blue cimmaron. I need something like that to. People ask me to re-blue battered old Civilian rifles of little vaule. That stuff would do the trick.

I took the gunkote off and used some cold blue on it. It turned out pretty good & looks more like it is supposed to look. You can see in one pic where I had to fix the front sight, wich is the reason I had to refinish it any way.

Nice looking rifle. Would you mind sharing any tips or info on the gunkote. I've been wanting to try it but am worried I'll screw up one of my babies. Stuff like: Is it any good? How hard is it to work with, how does it look, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Well, maybe it was the type of rifle I used or just the gunkote it's self but it made it look sorta fake. It is easy to use, just read the destructions & you will be ohtay. Maybe if I had used it on a more modern rifle or a semiauto it would have clicked better for me. Although the blue doen't look better than the gunkote the blue "looked" better to me, if ya know what I mean.
