The Monkey & I went to the range today, when one of my muzzle-loader buddies brings out a mortar, then lights it with a torch! He was shooting beer cans filled with cement. They went the whole 100 yards. Fairly accurate, actually.

Those buggers are so cool! I'd love to shoot one ..... and help empty the projectile bodies, too! :icon_biggrin::cheers:
Here's a build tutorial of sorts: http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=253961
I also found a bunch of twats on Youtube shooting these things in their backyards!

I'm in the process of building a mountian howizter, in between other projects. I need to make the trunions and then start on the carriage, the hardest part is finding the wheels.
It will look kinda like this when finished

Here's the second one I built years ago, it shot pringles cans full of concrete about 100 yards.

I saw one of these posted somewhere else where the guy was using it to kill feral cats. Have you ever seen that?

can you just build one of these, or does it have to be registered with the BATFE like firearms?

From what I understand, if you use black power, and they are muzzle loaders, they are like black powder rifles, thus non modern firearms. IMHO

Wild Bill that is a perfect size, Nice job you did building it. Two questions.. Does it take ffg or fffg black powder? about how many grains does it take to launch a concrete filled Pringles can?

I would think, since you're only lobbing it a hundred yards or so, that you would only need, what, 200-300 grains of powder? It can't take too much, I wouldn't think. And about the non-modern firearms thing, a howitzer or mortar is considered a dangerous weapon, therefore the guidelines are a little more stringent than with mere smallarms. If, however, you aren't launching dangerous projectiles, then your loophole is that you simply have an elaborate noisemaker. I'm still working on a saboted tennis ball gun.
