I bought some 308 ammo packed 20rds to a box. Headstamped 56 and TE, also has what looks like a square with a cross inside. Was told it was French. Bought it cheap enough, figured someone here would have the low-down on this stuff.
He also had a bunch of Chilean 308, but I remembered reading that's supposed to be too hot, so didn't get any of that.
Any info would be great.
Thanks.

I have no info on the french other that it should be good as it was probably only dropped once. The Chilean 308 I remember as being all right and maybe a little hot, depending on what you will be shooting it out of. At this point I'd be getting all the ammo I could get my hands on unless it was just horribly priced and if there are any problems with it get it to a reloader and have it reloaded safely.
BTW, welcome and :dsia:

I would have bought some of the Chilean if I'd known it was ok to shoot through my CETME.
He was selling 500rds for $150.

On the french, they were a member of Nato, thus the ammo should be nato spec, on the chilian, I have no direct experience with it.

I had some Chilean a while back, and it was discernably hotter than south african. Of course, I shot it first then researched it. It turned out there have been some pretty bad results with that ammo, similar to problems seen with Indian ammo. Although I did not have any bad results, I would not shoot it again. I would do a search on the headstamp and see if the stuff you are looking at is safe to shoot. Good luck with it.
