The H&R 999 Sportsman in .22LR is a break open "lemon squeezer" Type revolver which functions much like a Webley. It has a built in web directly behind the trigger guard to fill up the space that would normally pinch or discomfort the shooter and offers support to the middle finger. It was in its day a "target pistol" but the sights lack proper adjustments for serious target work. It is considered by some a "tackle box" gun in that you threw it in a tackle box and forgot about it until you needed it to dispatch a snake or whatever. It held 9 shots and was offered in varying length barrels 4" and 6" are the most popular around though a 2" Defender was also made available. It offered a safety transfer bar that kept the gun from going off if it was accidentally dropped. These were manufactured in the 30's,40's & 50's. Characteristics of the 999 are a crisp SA but a heavy DA and a nice deep almost S&W type blued finish. With the push of a small release the cylinder comes out with ease for cleaning. This helps with detailing the cylinder and barrel. Those who have shot one will know that if you do not shoot all the rounds in your cylinder and open up the gun the ejection star will only eject those cases that were fired (neat huh :woohoo-1: ) With a 6" barrel the gun weighs approx 30 Oz.

My example is a 6" that was obtained about a year ago from a widow who's late husband left her with literally a room full of guns that needed to go to a good home. These can be obtained anywhere from $150-$300's depending on variations and condition.

I'll put up more info as I find it including serial# and DOM.

Source for some of the above info "Textbook of Pistols and Revolvers" By Hatcher.

Every week (mondayish) I'm going to try and do a basic intro thread to a gun that has not been discussed or given a review or just whatever. This is aimed to help people seeking info on that specific firearm. issue 1 of ????

That is your classic outdoorsmen pistol. It was favored by trappers, fishermen, hikers and campers. You got a very accurate, well made and rugged revolver at a low price. The flood of European western type 22. and the Ruger Bearcat cut into it's market (cowboy style). But you would be hard pressed to find a better and more practical pistol to take to the woods or water with. Not to mention slow fire target shooting or just plinking tin cans. I have shot one many times and found them to accurate. Your looks like it is great shape.
