I picked up a nice 8mm Mauser, but I can't seem to get the handguards or front stock off. What is the best tool for holding in the band to get the front ring off? Bolt and mag well were a piece of cake but the front is a pain.
Thanks,

What I do is use a C-clamp to squeeze the spring and wrap the wood under the clamp with a rag as not to dent it.

Same here! I use a hand held clamp type.

I am going to pick up a flat side clamp. I try the c clamp, but it has the pivot head and will not stay on the stock. It keeps sliding off.
Thanks for the help.

Guys, I've never used a clamp to get the bands off. I have one diffcult rifle and I use a dowel rod to push the spring in at the hole and tap the sling ring with a small deal blow.

Thanks for the advice guys, finally got a C clamp to work with a small piece of wood under the clamp. Worked like a charm. Took over an 30 min to clean all the gunk from under the stock.
Can't wait to try her out this weekend at the range.
