The POWS trying to escape a nazi camp by building a pommel horse? I remember seeing it when I was quite young. The POWs built a pommel horse they practiced on that was hollow on the inside. Everyday they would take it out and practice while a guy underneath was digging a tunnel. I thought it was Great Escape which I haven't seen for a long time, but I am watching it now and don't believe this is the movie.

Noper but it was something like it, Is it the one where they stage the play, to stage the excape? I remember an aplause machine built also, so the room sounded full of folks watching the play.

I don't recall. I was around 5 or 6 when I saw it, so quite some time ago. I've been tracking down some old war movies I used to watch in the workshop with my dad. I figure it'll be a nice birthday present for him, it will bring back some good memories.
We watched Memphis Belle quite a bit as well. I only remembered the Tomato soup part from that one. I recognized the name from the "Whats your top 10 war movies" thread though.

Oddly enough, I believe the answer was in your grasp. I think the movie you are looking for is "The Wooden Horse." See if this link looks like what you are after. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043147/plotsummary

Okie - I need more scoop on your movie - searching escape movies with a play is not getting me anywhere. I think I have seen this one before, but the Bridge on the River Kwai talent show scenes keep popping in my head. Do you remember anything else about the movie?

Stalag 17 is where they hide the pilot in the water tower.
It was the prototype for Hogans Heroes

ADA, on that movie, they were British, and it was a German POW camp I am remembering, the plot was something like the great excape, they dug a tunnel in the theater, staged a show, and during the show, the troops kept coming in, they kept the noise up with aplause machines(cranked leather flappers on big belts) to make the theater sound full as the guys excapeing thru the tunnel, by time the Germans(or maybe Italians ,but thinking Germans) figgured out and checked it out, the entire camp was gone.

Okie - The closest hit I have is "The Colditz Story." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047945/plotsummary
I hope that is what you are looking for. It does not give the plot summary that you described, but nothing I could find does. This one, at least, does not exclude itself as many of the others I have looked at do. I am suprised someone hasn't put together an easier to find list of POW movies.

Anyone here see Escape from Sobibor? That really moved me, as a young teen.

Yeah, I saw that when I was around 14 or so. Really hits your heart.

I found the one I was thinking of, its really obscure.

I had to go thur a list of titles about WWII on Wiki and read up on them. Atleast it was "D" so early in the list
On Colditz, its interesting on all of the excape attempts and actual escapes they were able to do, to include building but not launching the glider, that was featured in one film in the seventies. "Escape of the Birdmen" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066833/
Discovery, history or military channel had a thing on that place, to include an escape attempt by one of the prisoners by impersonating one of the Sargents of the Guard and trying to walk out I believe.
