What is a Pre Ban Norinco Chinese AK47 worth? It has a brite bore and doesn't appear to have been shot much at all. It says 56 before the serial #. Is that the year of manf?
Thanks, Steve :machinegun:

Steve I beleive that "56" is the chinese type, they all used that number, as for the year I imagine its imbeded in the serial number somewhere. As for value, it would depend on which receiver and other factors.

Is it stamped or milled? PG or thumbhole? Prices I have seen have ranged from low $400 to over a grand for an original, milled, unfired PG

It is stamped and has a PG. I talked to Tanker and he said that all of the ones he has seen had thumb holes. Was there any imported by Norinco before the 922R thing took effect. It says Norinco on the barrel but no where on the receiver is it marked.

Not sure how it all went, but seems like all the pre-Chinese ban were Polytechs, and then restamped Norinco and butt-hole stocked so they could be re-imported. Planning knows a lot about that stuff, might PM him..
My milled Type 86 is stamped Polytech Legend, then lightly restamped Norinco on the bottom (reimport butthole stock)
The Chinese ban and 922 are seperate issues, unless you go PG from butthole, then you have to comply with 922. Burden of proof as to date of import is on you (or the seller)

the "type 56" is what china named there ak's. if that is all that is stamped on it it is a pre-ban rifle. it would have been exported by norinco. there should be some import stamps on it. ( some were stamped on the side by the trigger. i have one of them somewhere.( i have moved most of my pre-ban stuff to north texas) it should have an attached foldunder bayonet on it and i think i remember it being a stamped receiver. some were underfolder stocks and some had regular stocks.
there were some polytech exported ak's type 56, but they will all be stamped polytech.
there were a few parts kit brought in late in the 80's and put together in arizona ( i cannot remember the company name),but there were problems with them. ( i remember "blue sky" for some reason)
i will try to look thru some of my old notes this weekend and see what i can find. i am doing this from memory and ,well my memory is not so good now.
please don't think this is all correct, i have not thought about this for a while.
the going price on these with orginal box , papers, mags, etc has been around $850-$1200, if they don't have the extras then the are a $550 to $700 rifle.
a lot of the had the model # ground off and MAK90 stamped on them. i find a lot of them that way. i think i have some of the also.....

Ok I have some more info on this gun. By the way a buddy of mine from work bought this gun yesterday for 700. He found a web site somewhere that had a great deal of info on it. I will post it when I get it. From the serial numbers the site said it was imported in 89. I'm not sure by who but it says Sacremento Ca. on it. So whats the deal on the 922r thing? If it was imported before 922r was in effect do you still have to comply? I see that J&G have a 223 84-s on their web site for $1900.
