Greetings,
Well I finally jumped on the bandwagon, and purchased a P6 for $279.00. Probably, the best investmant I have made this year (compared to my 401K).
Great pistol, spot on at 10M. I reblued it yesterday (cold) and it looks great!
For those of you on the fence for an inexpensive 9mm pistol, the P6's are still out there, and IMHO are worth it.

I think I'm going to Wausau to price up 9mm's Saturday... doubt they'll have any of these, but I think I'm going for a P226 anyway.
Oh yeah... pics!

A dealer had four of them at the little show this weekend in town, and he said one was in unfired condtion, he sold it saturday, the other three had just slight wear, he had them priced I think at 329 each.

Man these are great looking pistols, and a good deal to boot. I just choke when I think of only 8 Rounds of 9mm. But it would make a nice addition to the the P226.

I ordered them thru Southern Ohio Guns, and picked them up at my local dealer up here.
I was in our local Duhnams the other day, had a nice selection but choked when I saw what they were asking for the rifles :kookaid:

Well Fellas, I went out to Outdoor Adventures (The Bloomberg thing) yesterday and felt up a nice 9mm EAA Witness and a P6. I could not decide due to mag cap., but I think I'm going with the P6. My budget is strapped for a while and I think this might be the way to go.

Here is a picture of mine. I got it from AIM earlier this year. It came with two mags. I bought an extra one right before the price went up on the mags. I should have bought one more. I carry three mags so the 8 round capacity is not an issue to me. BUy one now while you can. I have seen them in gun shops going for close to $400.00. The gun can be reblued easily. I use cold blue on mine and it looks almost new.

Why, you need some more time at the range? (Heehee!)
I've felt confident carryina a mere 7 or 7+1 in a .45 around for years.
Hi capacity just means you get to miss more. ;)

I got mine at my local shop. She was asking $325 but I got it for $305, If it had been fired more than the 8 rounds in the test target I would be surprised. I avoided these because of only 8+1 rounds but after getting my P226 I really like Sigs. Plus this one feels so good for CCW.

Ever carry a wheel gun? Six rounds; and either speed loaders or loose rounds in a pouch. For me, when off-duty, it isn't about a sustained firefight; it is about safety. I carry a 1911 with 2 spare magazines; plenty of ammo. All the training I've received, that addresses off-duty carry is almost the opposite of on-duty situational shooting. Of course at work I have 30 other officers to assist; more worried about crossfire then anything else!
If you feel that you need more then 1 or 2 spare magazines (or reloads) for the gun you are carrying concealed you probably need to sit down and discuss why you carry with someone who is experienced so you can evaluate why and how you carry. Not meant to be an insult or attack on anyone but off-duty it's about safely disengaging; sometimes being the best witness is the correct course of action.

I know lots of folks feel they have to rush out and switch the hammer spring on the P6, but I am perfectly happy with the one that came on mine. With lubrication and use, the DA trigger just keeps getting better and better.
Besides, the hammer spring is part of the recoil mass of this pistol, and I like +P ammo in the 9mm. I also have a stash of +P+ surplus 9 I keep for my UZI. Not recommended for pistols, but I would dig into it in an emergency.
I will keep mine just the way Sig designed it. It works fine as is.

Six?!?! You cheater... My little .357 mag is only a 5-shot - hahaha
Gotta make each one count - practice, practice, practice - I figure the more I shoot at the range, the less I need to haul around everyday. But then again, because I'm a big believer in Murphy's Law, I always keep 6 more in my pocket on a Bianchi strip (best product ever!)
+1 on the "sustained firefight" concept - I'm convinced that unless you accidentally walk onto a Jean Claude Van Damme movie set, most "gun fights" are over pretty darn quick... well at least from the bulk of the case studies I've read...

Well it was a toss between a cz-82 and this, the dealer as I was priceing the cz just suggested it, and gave me the price out the door five off of what he had it tagged. I love to go to smaller shows, and see dealers I don't get to see at larger shows, or at shows that the show operator is unpopular with many of the dealers(here in oklahoma there is a show operator that has in the past been banned from many websites, and during the political run up has jacked his show admission by double, to twelve bucks for small shows). This place was in a small show barn in Taliaquah. Took for ever to find it but figgure it was worth going too.

I was looking at picking up a p226. I found a new shop out in the boondocks today when I was looking for some property to buy. They had 3 p6's. I'm going to pick one of these up instead of the p226. Now to decide which one I want. The nicest one is $50 above the other two. I'm thinking of getting one of the cheaper ones and just cold bluing it up a little. Going to go pick one of them up tomorrow.

I would go for the latest date you can find, regardless of finish wear. It is more likely to have the later profile feedramp on the barrel.

Do the older ones have some problems? The oldest one there had a serial number of M445xxx.

The p6's have a date on the right side of the slide. Earlier ones were designed for FMJ. Mine was made in '83, and has the older style ramp. While mine has fed every type of JHP I have tried, others have reported problems. Sig changed the ramp profile about halfway through production.
I have seen P6's dated as late as '93.
The older ramp is not a deal breaker...they can be re-profiled fairly cheaply
Finish wear isn't much of a problem either, particularly on the slide. Mine had some wear on the slide. Some cold blue made it look great.

This is how sdk1968 told me how he does it and his seem to turn out pretty dang nice.
First I degrease it really well. Some use purple power, some use brake cleaner, I had neither so I used denatured alcohol. Soak and scrub the parts real good to remove any grease/oil. Let it air dry.
Make sure to wear gloves to keep and fingerprints and oil off the part. Heat it just a tad with a heat gun or blow dryer. I actually skipped this step, but if I had a shop or workbench to do it on, I would probably do it. I just did it outside on out porch and was too lazy to get out the extension cord. Put the blueing in a pump spray bottle. Spray the part real good making sure to completely cover it, but not so much it pools up and runs. Try not to get too many bubbles on the surface as it gives an uneven finish.
Let it sit for a minute or two and then wipe it off. If it starts to dry on it's own, I wipe the whole part down. I don't let it dry on it's own or you get uneven finish. The directions say to nuetralize it with cold water after each step. I skipped that step. Just wipe it dry with a lint free cloth. I just used shop towels. I scrub it real good to remove any coating/bluing particles. Your cloth will turn black letting you know it's coming off. Once I have everything wiped down good, I hit it again with more bluing. I put three coats on this to get it good and dark. I might go another coat or two to get it really dark.
Anyways, after you feel you have done enough coats, this is what Sean calls the super secret squirrel step. After wiping it down the final time, spray it with some dark oil. I use PB Blaster. Hose it down real good, making sure to get every nook and cranny. The more oil the better. Once it's sopping wet, I rub it down real good with my hands. I usually keep the gloves on so I don't get oil all over my hands. Rub it all over to work it into the surface and remove any built up bluing/rust. Once you feel it's good, wipe it off with a rag. Once it's all clean again, hit it with the dark oil, making sure it's sopping wet again. Then I throw it in a coffee can or cool-whip container and put the cover on. Leave it over night. It will darken some more.
Next I just clean it off again and hit it with gun oil as I normally would. This seems to give some excellent results.

will give it a try tomorrow.....did you scuff it up or anything or just the deep cleaning for prep?
weasel_master
05-03-2009, 09:43 PM
I didn't scuff it at all. It turns out really nice without it. I was a little intimidated so I didn't even remove the old finish. If you look close you might be able to see the new finish over the old finish. But if you're that close to my pistol, the last thing on your mind is the finish. You can't see unless you are specifically looking for it.

No problem. Like I said, SDK taught me, I'm just merely passing it along. I may try adding a few more coats later just to see how dark it will get. It might help to blend the old finish with the new.

Those P225/P6's are a great value particularly when one isn't concerned with finish.
I bought this one from a guy who had ordered several hand picked ones. The finish on this is the original. He had installed the Hogue Extreme Aluminum Grips and also had bought several new magazines which he then outfitted with some custom base plates. Those base plates are the bomb as they are milled to continue the plane of the front strap. The factory ones stick out quite a bit and can get downright painful when shooting. These custom milled base plates fixed the problem of the magazine base plate uncomfortably rubbing your little finger while shooting and they are very nice. Anyway, the guy needed money very quickly, so I whipped out $425 and got the P6 with the $140. grips and seven magazines (five of them new) all with custom base plates ($15.00 each). A pretty good deal in my estimation
I had the opportunity to participate in a Bar-Sto Barrel group buy for P225/P6 barrels. On a whim I decided to order an extended/threaded barrel. This way, if I ever get off my but and do the paperwork I 'll be able to put a suppressor on it. I ordered the same thread and pitch as the Sig Sauer factory extended threaded barrels becuase I can get one for my P226 for under $200 and then I'll be able to use one can for two pistols. The only thing that I need to do now is put a set of night sights on it and its good to go.
