i just got one of jdowney's wood grips.all i can say is, if you like they way they look, wait til you hold one.
great job john,thanks.

the question is:
after some bleach and water i have the grip lightened up and ready to stain.
anyone got an idea of what to use to match the cetme stock?
i have tried golden oak which, on pine is almost perfect, but on the walnut that the grip is made of its too dark.open to ideas here.john anything laying around that you cpuld try on a piece of scrap?

i really dont want to stain my cetme wood to match the grip would rather match the grip to the wood if possible.

If it's any help:

To match the G3 stock I used several thick coats of red maple stain followed by some tung oil and then a couple coats of Kiwi brown Parade Gloss polish.

With some patience, trial and error you'll find the best match for your Spanish stock and not need to stain your military wood to match. And don't forget to post pics!

Hey, glad you like the feel!

Hard to say without seeing your stock furniture, but you could try some gel stain. I find it a lot easier to control than liquid stains. From the pictures of most Spanish furniture I've seen, and the color of mine, a medium maple color would probably work best, they're usually kind of an orange-tan color. You can always layer other colors over it too if you need to, or even mix two colors to get the shade you're looking for. Unfinished walnut will also bleach fairly quickly in the sun if you need to lighten it up more. Hard to say how long exactly, depends on your elevation and humidity. Out in NM at 7000 feet, it takes a few days to a week.

Matching G3 wood like Patria Povo's got is going to be a bit easier from the pictures I've seen, but if you get it good and bleached you should be able to get a good match with a bit of patience.

I may still have some maple colored gel stain, I can't remember now. I did before I moved a few years ago, but no clue if its still around now. I'll be over in Arizona for about three weeks, but I can see what I can come up with when I get back.
