figured i would start a new post for this.after trying a few different types of stain i finally settled on:
minwax wood finish colonial maple 223
this was applied to a bleached grip.i didnt figure that the dark walnut wood would accept a light colored stain without bleaching.the down side of bleaching wood is that it tends to tone down the grain appearance as well as making the color lighter.
also,i need to tone down the shine a bit to match the rest of the stock.
first i started with the bleached grip

then applied the stain, first with a small brush and allowed to penetrate for 10-15 minutes then wiped off excess (done this about 3 times).then used a paper towel dipped in stain wiped/rubbed another 2-3 coats on (allowing time to dry between coats) til i was happy with the shade.then applied the oil to seal and pretty it up,as i said it shines too much at the moment.
