She came to us a battered and abused argentine mauser. My dad picked up a .308 barrel years ago on sale at Midway, and recently had it put on by our gunsmith friend. He had mostly forgotten about it, he's been into his savage 99's and model 12 winchesters lately.
I think he'll like this one. I added the turned bolt and safety, bedded the stock, timney trigger and polished up some pieces for him.
I've been working on it off and on for the better part of a year. I've sanded it down three times now trying to find the finish I like that will hold up to his kind of hunting. If I keep it any longer it'll probably end up the size of a toothpick. I've spent the better part of fifteen hours with 1500 grit final finishing this baby up. the pics really don't do it justice.
Some of you might call it bubba, but my dad will be surprised when he finds it under the tree this year. now I've gotta make something for mom so she doesn't feel left out.

He will be happy with it, I know I would if my son did that for me. All he does is shoot all my ammo!!!

I'll do a range report shortly. I have some extra glass stored around my apartment somewhere. I have the trigger set at about three quarters of a pound :icon_biggrin:

Thats a nice Rifle Rex.. You know the Argy contract Mausers were some of the best that ever left Germany. I like Mauser sporters and use one my self.
Can you tell us more about the stock, the bent bolt Timey trigger and modern saftey. What eles to you have planed for it?

The stock was an oversized Fajen blank, it was on sale from midway because it was a pretty rough cut, and took quite a bit of sanding and working with a file to get all the tool markings out. The timney is the adjustable model that was also on sale from midway, as well as the safety and bolt. my gunsmith put on the barrel and bedded the stock for me. All I have planned is to fit the metal buttplate and to add a scope and lap the rings.

3 lbs? that's good enough for my glock, but not a present:wink: I used to shoot pins with a guy who had a seven pound 1911 with a one pound trigger pull: now that was ridiculous(he was also pushing 230 gr. fmj's at 1300 fps.)

I just lapped some rings and put on a simmons 4-12x44 whitetail classic scope I swiped off my old savage model 99(he's been hunting for 35 years and isn't the kind of guy who thinks $400 dollar glass has to go on everything). At least it gives me an excuse to take some .308's out to the range.

I need to final fit the steel buttpad I have for it, but I don't know if I'm finished with the stock yet. the ziptie was to hang it up in my apartment while the stock was drying. I don't know how many times I've banged my head on it walking back from the kitchen in the dark.
