Assuming that we will have SOME kind of renewed attack on "assault rifles" in 2008 following the election.....what do you think is the best (non-C&R) evil rifle out there today for the money? You know, something worth buying a few of for a rainy day.

My vote goes for the Romanian WASR10 no-ban.

Now that they supposedly have started putting Tapco G2 triggers in them at the factory, and have supposedly stopped installing the front sights canted, I think a no-ban AK for a hair over $300 is the deal to have.

Now I have and dig the Yugo M70s right now.....but I'm talking about the cheapest and best deal out there right now...

What say you firearm brethren?

My vote goes for the Romanian WASR10 no-ban.

I second that motion, but want to be on the watch for the 'actual selling price' (not the msrp) of the 5.56 Nato AKs supposedly coming out soon. If it is $350-ish, I'd nominate THAT one, since it eats domestically produced ammunition. It is the bottom rifle in the below advertisement.

Also a good idea, with one small inexpensive addition:

My answer depends on what the motivation is. If I wanted to stock up so I can make a buck off of any form of Clintonesque "assault rifle" ban, the best bet would be AR-15 lowers, AK receivers, and hi-cap mags, assuming that there will be a "grandfather" clause. Hang on to those sales receipts. If I wanted to stock up so that me and mine could enjoy having decent firearms during a rainy decade, I'd get whatever MBR and/or carbine that floats your boat. Just about any semi-auto rifle (even shotguns and rimfires) might fit this category.

An outright ban on any and all firearms would sweep any preps away.

as well. Anti-gunners POSITIVELY HATE the AK...for them it is the rally point for gun bans--hi-cap, lo tek, reliable, used the world round and in movies for lead-slingin mayhem. No other rifle is so revered and hated. Fame=Infamy anyhow. A tree-hugger can know shit abt guns, but they can recognize an AK! I bet even Pelosi could pick one off a shelf and identify it.
And let's not forget Samul L's character in Jackie Brown...that slogan, plus Nick Cage's line about AKs in Lord of War, burned the AK into the psyche of every cinema-goer for the last 5 years...and since 1991, we've been seeing them on news TV being captured, used or destroyed in the Mideast.

Every 2nd amendment lovin' american NEEDS and AK...at least one. Post-Ban Romanian WASR Hi-Caps (no ban) seem to go for about $365USD around here these days, and that's only an increase of 40bux over the course of 4 years...not bad, less inflation than we've seen in petroleum or gold in the same timeframe. and, for that other 40USD, you get the bayo lug and the M brake, and the front pistol grip now, +mags, pouch, oiler, and bayo..

Better yet, get two, and the $$ youd spend on th other two, spend that on many thou rounds of ammo...

Make sure to get those spiffy 20round hungarian tanker mags, and of couse the requisite 3- rounders from romania, or east germany. Put a drum on there to really thumb you nose at the Hi-cap BS>

-----------------------------------------------------------------------[related note]The real definitive reason that 1022 won't pass this time is they included a TON of civvie hunting guns on th list, AND made it non-sunsetting, AND made there be no Grandfathering (that last one would make us all gun felons in one fell swoop..Molon lave indeed, dum-phux!)

If I can find them, I go for other high cap ak, like Maddis, and Norinco(chinese) even if they have thumbholes. I just like them for the fact that they are better built than the wasrs. I have been able to find them used here abouts for less or the same as a used Wasr-10 high cap runs.

Another good thing though are the saigas, I have one in each caliber available, they were low cost rifles.

What ever you get, get your hands on magazines, these arent much fun with out mags, and the attraction of most of these type of guns is you can have many high cap mags.
