Getting ready to put together my "nightstand" gun. Basically a 1911 Govt. size, with a light rail.

I decided long ago to go a 2-tone, black/stainless finish. Then I started thinking I might want to do the flat top, ball mill, serrated top.

Now I am on the fence, maybe a simple flat top, or even leave the slide alone, other than the usual edge bevel and clean-up.

Anyhow, the 1st pic is what it will look like, more or less, with a standard slide.

2nd pic is of a slide finished like I wanted to do mine...

Place your vote.... :musik29:

They both look great but, I think you should get off the fence and do a flat top, ball mill, serrated top. Just my 2 cts.

It isn't a restoration so go all out! flat top, serrated, ball milled :wow:

I think ball-milled is the adding of fullers there on the corners to reduce weight?

Serrated in the gun world must mean something totally diff than in the gun world...fer sher. izzit the lines in the side for grip, or the parallel tiny lines along to top of the slide?

Either way, add the details if you can.

I really dig the fluted bbl on that 2nd .45 custom...super schweet!

Actually, both the grip and top are called serrations (lines). They also have golf ball dimples, checkering, snake scales..

The ball mill is the round groove running lengthwise along the slide...

That is actually a 38 Super in the second pic, if I remember.. the 45 bbl doesn't have enough meat to cut that much.

Getting ready to put together my "nightstand" gun. Leave it as is.

Who's gonna see it at night, anyway? http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c343/warthog42/Smiles/devilish.gif

I dunno..doing a gun up like that is like getting dressed up in your tux then staying home. Its freaking sweet but for a nightstand gun i dunno. I would have to say GO FOR IT. those are nice pictures let us know how much one can take off the slide as far as the ball mill work goes. I have 2 slides I've been working on for a while and I like the looks of the ball mill that would look sweet on my NPA gun :icon_eek:

That seems like money better spent on other projects rather than the nightstand gun that no-one will ever see. I'm sure you could spend that money elsewhere...:ak: :fn-fal: :sterb126: :machinegun::g3: or just on more ammo?!?!

No worries... all mine are for me, not for others!! Have plenty of ammo as well....

And it will make more than a few range trips, so some folks will undoubtably see it.

Besides, do it yourself costs nothing but time.

I think you need to dump all the money and time you can into a firearm, so I say flattop, serrated, ball milled.

The machined slide sure look pretty but will it negatively change the balance of the pistol with the light attached.

/Just something to consider.
