I was thinking about getting some steel cased ammunition for my cetme (brown bear or silver bear). Is this a bad idea? If so, why? I know that the cases might split but why does that happen? Also does anyone know the difference between brown bear and silver bear? Is silver bear just not laquered?

The biggest issue that comes to mind is excess wear on the extractor.

Because the steel case is harder on the extractor than brass? How much is an extractor? Because if I save money on ammo and the extractor is only like $50 or something then I still come out ahead.

RTG has extractors for $5. I've replaced mine, but it can be tricky because of the small spring that holds it in. Still, I haven't used the steel cased Russian ammo in my CETME, though I've used it in my Remington 7400. I just love my Spanish Lady too much to risk it.

Aren't brown bears laquered cases? I've aways heard to avoid those if you're shooting something with a fluted chamber

Or just clean your chamber much more often.

Brown bears are but I don't think the silvers are? I'm not sure. I shot 1000rds of brwn bear in my ak with no problems...

FWIW Silver bears are zinc coated.

Am in the middle of shooting this Russian lacquered steel through the Cetme. Comapred to the brass Indian it is consistently more accurate. And unlike the Indian w/out any malfunctions (yet). Indian corrosive? Russian is not. But who really knows? I think its the smell. The Indian smelled unlike any American ammo I have ever fired. I like the smell of fired high velocity powder. The Indian smelled, nay it stank. It also had a foully chimney soot type of residue not found in the Russian. Truthfully, it is not the smell cause corrosive 8mm smells good. Obviously the Indian military supply/procurement people are from a lower cast than the rest of us. Poor Indian infantryman.

The monarch brand is also laqured coted but I have found no ill effects though I clean the weapon after every outing. It dose seem quite accurate and really leaves the weapon no dirtier than mil surplus, like I posted before no ftf or fte to date. :dsia:
