Don't mean to spam the board, but I'm a new user and posted a licensed Greek SAR-8 FS on the sales board. I've been out of the loop with prices and what's popular these days, so any comments you have to bring me up to speed would be great. I have a couple of questions:
It looks to me like many clone manufacturers have shut down, why do you figure that is? Places like Vollmer and Special weapons are no more.
The availability of G-3, HK, CETME parts and mags is just fantastic. It was never like this 10 years ago when I was shooting HKs. I paid over $40 for a single aluminum mag.
It seems the PTR-91s are the reigning quality HK-91 clones. The aluminum SAR-8 wasn't well received, and the steel SAR-8 and FMP (licensed versions) have all but dried up.
What else has changed? How much is surplus 7.62 these days?
thanks,

Welcome to the forum Tidepool.
There are still manufacturers out there making Cetme/HK clones.
http://www.ptr91.com/ makes an excellent rifle.
http://www.vectorarms.com/indexframe.html
http://www.centuryarms.biz/ still has receivers.
Special Weapons are still around, they are just such criminals they have to change their name every other week. Here is a list of names for Special Weapons.
TACTICAL WEAPONS TRAINING ACADEMY INC
COHARIE ARMS, INC.
COHARIE ORDNANCE FACTORY INC.
OMEGA ARMS, INC.
SPECIAL WEAPONS, INC., A CLOSE CORPORATION
ACME PARTS INC.
BCH MANUFACTURING, LLC
TOP NOTCH ACCESORIES, LLC
TOP NOTCH ACCESSORIES, INC
BOBCAT WEAPONS INC.
FAC is out of business and they are who made the aluminum receiver.
Surplus 7.62 Nato has skyrocketed in price in the past few months. It has all but disappeared for the time being. Its up to $.40 a round now....from $.16 a round a few months ago.

$0.40 a round? I would imagine that manufacturers of 308 battle rifles would have a real interest in keeping these supplies flowing. I'll bet AK ammo is still dirt cheap, which doesn't help. I know there's not much of a comparison, but I'd buy a 7.63x39 AR-15 upper for plinking in any event.
Thanks for the tips. I'll stay away from SW, for sure.

At 149$ -200$ per K, 762x39 is no longer dirt cheap.

I traded for a Greek SAR8 in better than new condition. Look to shot very little if not at all. It came with new HK Collapsible stock. It was $800.
It was a deal but I had to make it compliance by adding JLD parts.
I had a Greek SAR8 in the '90. Paid $1100 for it and sold it for $1300 a year later.
You would think these would be more $$$$ but I guess we will have to wait for Pr. H. Clinton to show up on the hill :champion:

That $800 was really, really lucky. These rifles should definitely be US-specd before another ban comes up, or those thumbholes will be stuck on them forever! I think the stock has a lot to do with the depression of value, even though it's not TOO bad a chore to reconfigure it.
Most on this board seem to dial in their CETME rifles and AL-receiver HK clones to run well, and I've seen some impressive builds for not a lot of dough, but it takes some doing. The issues I see discussed really tell me the originals are different animals.
What I'll miss the most about shooting the SAR is the total lack of 'mechanical' noises from the action, save the 'thwack' of the 2 lb bolt on the buffer button. I hate the tinny clanking of my SKS, though it has a certain charm.

With all the problems Century had, imagine how they would function in FA!!!
I cant complain though... mine's worked perfectly from the factory. Only issues Ive had is buying parts an running outta money!

I've been following the HK-91, SAR-8, and US Clones for a while. The HK's will always bring a premium because they are the "original" German gun. (Little do most people know the real CETME is the original) The Greek made (EBO SAR-8) and the american made PTR's were made on real "honest to god german" machinery. IMHO, Pretty much the only diffrence between the Germans and the Greek/PTR is the name on the side.
The prevelance of out of spec receivers (think CIA and others) has tainted the undereducated gunbuyers opinion. While the 2nd and 3rd generation SAR-8 and the CIA G-3/91 Sporter/Cetme Hybrids may be fine guns, They aren't the real deal.
/Did I neglect to mention that the reason I prefer the EBO to the more readily available PTR is because I am of Greek heritage?

When I got my first SAR8 back in the '90s I had a choice of the real post ban HK91 and a Greek SAR8.
The Bell&Carlson stock was way more better than the pregnet HK butthole stock.
The HK had a strange barrel shroud that was removable.
The SAR8 is a Springfield and came with a lifetime warranty and was $100 less than the HK91.
