This is basically just a big ass AK in 7.62x54.

A fun gun to shoot...pretty accurate, but sort of heavy. I bought some Russian sniper ammo (7N1) back when it was still pretty cheap, it shoots well using that.

This fills the void in my collection of the SVD that I will never be able to afford. They look similar, but aren't even close to being in the same league. Still a fun gun none the less.

Nice! I like the refinish you did on the furniture.

The 7N1 shoots very well in mine too.

I paid $600 for mine (private sale). I spruced up the wood as it was a very blonde and wanted more of a SVD kind look. I think IO is suppose to have some last I knew.

Very nice. What did you use on the wood to give it that shine?

For a wile, I was hot-n-heavy on the trail of a 762x54R autoloader...all I could really find in the 600USD range was some ROMAK IIIs from Tennessee Gun, or the CAI ones, which had mixed reviews.

Rampager, is that an actuall SSG or a Romak III?

k98, did you build that from a ROMAK III kit? Last time I looked, the kits were running like 400USD.

Nice rifles, fellas...I'm a bit green over here with envy...or mebbe it is just algae...hard to tell at 4pm on a friday.:crazyeyes2:

K98...that's a really nice looking build. I was gonna go the kit route too, but about the time I decided to try it the kits dryed up except for the expensive ones.

Steelcore...Mine is a IO SSG-97. It says it's made in Romania on the receiver also. I paid $600 for it (private sale) and it came with the Russian 6x42 scope which is a nice unit. Really neat lighted reticle on these scopes with sort of a built in range finder.

So far it's been great, not one FTF or any issues at all. I picked up a 4-pack mag pouch for it also. Like I said, I got some 7N1 for it back when it was cheap for $150 a case. 7N1 is really good stuff in these guns.

Thanks Rampager!

Steelcore,That was my third build so prices were alot cheaper then. I think I paid 325$ for the kit and 110$ for the Romy reciever.

I am going to go to the range today and see how that Hungarian light ball does out of it.

how it does, K98...

That last gunshow had the 7N1 sniper ammo for 8bux per 20...freakin pricey , but it is a specialty round. Those russkis spent a lotta time figuring hoe to destabilize a round to get near HP mass-transer outta FMJ...same with that first 5.45 stuff...hollow tipped FMJ.

The Hungarian silvertip shot great out of the PSL. Better then anything else I have used, better then the Czech, better then the 7N1, better then the Wolf !

That said, I got five rnd groups that were OUTSTANDING. The sixth rnd was always a flyer! I tried it over and over 5 rnds touching,or nearly so, no. six a flyer.
Like alot of semi's,it will tend to throw a rnd out of the group now and then. But never so far,or so consistantly.

I mean, I have had it vertically string as the rather thin barrel got hot.

I wonder if something is coming into contact with the barrel when it gets hot? This makes me think that I may need to channel the handguards to try to float the barrel.

Here are two of the targets from yesterday,at 100 yrds. I have four of them that are nearly identical. The point of impact is higher then the other ammo I have tried in this rifle.

Wish I had bought a PSL a couple years ago. They are scarce and pricey.

looks like i have a couple of the romak-3 ( i think thats what they are) in the pile, new in the boxes, i think i got them a few years ago (3-5), i will try to dig down to them later this week and take some pictures of them. what are they going for now? ( they are not for sale) i was just wondering about there value. how do they shoot? i never shot one of them. i have shot one of my svd's ( 3 rounds).

mine produces that with tight groups, minus the flier. I was using czech bxn 65 ammo and would basicly get one hole at 100 yds.

Turned out the scope mount was loose. Not sure why it would hold zero most of the time, then throw a flyer. Locktighted and retightend the castle nut on the belarus mount and the problem went away.

well i finally dug down to the 2 boxes that i thought i had 2 romak-3 in them.
i had forgotten i had bought these a while back and i have been looking for over a year for 1 to buy. when i opened the boxes there were 2 rifles in there, but they are not romak-3 rifles, but FPK dragunov, made in romania. they look like romak-3 rifles to me, everything looks new on them except for the lower handguards. one has a bayonet lug and the other does not. both have flash hiders. they both have leather slings, scope, cleaning rod, leather tool/cleaning pouch and cleaning kit . the one with the bayonet lug has a bayonet with it, a canvas scope bag and a pouch with 4 new mags in it.

i guess i will have to find out what a FPK dragunov is.....

i will take some pictures of them on saturday and post them, i go to the VA tomorrow ( it's an all day thing)

They are the same thing. The early imports had those markings on them.
