Hey guys! I just found my old M98a mauser hiding in the back of my closet. It was my first firearm and I shot it quite a bit upon turning 18. However, I looked at the tip of the crown and noticed what looks like rust. After clearing the weapon and taking the bolt out, I noticed that the bore had a reddish substance, once again, that looked like rust, down the whole thing. When I bought the gun, the bore was bright, but I see no pitting. I can only assume I didnt clean it well enough after a shoot of corrosive ammo. I dont know if this can be fixed and Ive already heard horror stories about replacing mauser barrels. Can this be repaired? Is it just rust or is this irreversible corrosion and pitting? Is there some solution I can put in it to get the gunk off?

I'd say its totally saveable... But its going to take a really good cleaning to get all the rust spots out of the bore... What I would suggest is getting a good bottle of Windex, a cleaning rod, bore mop, and some cleaning patches. Spray the windex down the bore - starting at the chamber end and let it flow out of the barrel thru the muzzle into a container or on the ground. Follow it up with a bore mop (like you clean a shotgun with) , then run cleaning patches thru the bore until they come out clean or nearly clean. Follow that up with some outers Nitro solvent bore cleaner on a cleaning patch and you should be good to go.. This is what I do to my LAR grizzly 50 cal after shooting corrosive 50 cal ammo...

I would try cleaning it with either hoppes #9 or balistol and see how it comes out. If you have any bore solvent for black powder that may work as well. If none of those work try electrolytic rust removal. It does work but the electrode needs to be in the bore. There is a tutorial on weaponsguild for this process.

I had the same issue with my yugo mauser, gave it a good cleaning and it came back shiny and good.
