This is the only Winchester I shoot in my Cetme.
Although PTR91 says not to shoot it in their guns. It shoots fine in my Cetme and gives me good Nato brass to reload.

+1. This is usually a seasonal Winchester run and shoots great in my Cetme and FALs.

.308 is the commercial cartridge developed by Winchester from the 7.62mmx51 Nato cartridge. It is not the same cartridge, nearly the same but not the same. The deminsions of the chamber on a .308 is slightly different than that of a 7.62x51 Nato chamber.
NATO brass is thicker and loaded to a lower cup pressure than the .308 ammo.
You can fire .308 in a Cetme or HK, but there is a chance that you will have a case seperation so if you do shoot it, get a broken case extractor before you go to the range.

Here are the specifics on the .308
Bullet diameter 0.308 in (7.8 mm)
Neck diameter 0.343 in (8.7 mm)
Shoulder diameter 0.454 in (11.5 mm)
Base diameter 0.470 in (11.9 mm)
Rim diameter 0.473 in (12.0 mm)
Rim thickness 0.050 in (1.3 mm)
Case length 2.015 in (51.2 mm)
Overall length 2.800 in (71.1 mm)
Rifling twist 1 in 12 in (305 mm)
    Primer type Large Rifle
Maximum pressure 62,000 psi (430 MPa)
.308 holds 56 grains of water as a case capacity.
    thinner case more capacity

Here are the specifics on the 7.62x51 Nato round.
Bullet diameter 7.62 mm (0.308 in)
Neck diameter 8.77 mm (0.345 in)
Shoulder diameter 11.53 mm (0.454 in)
Base diameter 11.94 mm (0.470 in)
Rim diameter 12.01 mm (0.473 in)
Rim thickness 1.27 mm (0.050 in)
Case length 51.18 mm (2.015 in)
Overall length 69.85 mm (2.750 in)
    Rifling twist 1:12"
    Primer type Large Rifle
Maximum pressure 415 MPa (60,200 psi)
Case capacity of 53 grains of water case capacity.
    (thicker case less capacity)

Most of this info is from Wikipedia some of it is from other sources on the web if you go looking for it.

Add a bit: Usually the only .308 I will run thorugh mine (FALs and my Cetme) is the Wolf steel cased stuff. It tends to be a bit on the lower end of the pressure spectrum and I haven't seen a casing seperation.

just tired as a dog, i hate work. oh well thats life lol. i went to nagels here in S.A. and they looked at me stupid when i told them there was a difference. i told them that NATO is usually loaded a little hotter and the case is a little thicker. he asked the "armorer" lol what a joke if you could shoot 308 out of a G3 chambered for 7.62 without ripping case heads. came back and told me in these words, "they are the same round boss." so i chuckled and turned down the 27 dollar box of s and b 308. you order your receiver yet so we can go turn some heads at the range soon?

I found the White Box Nato Winchester at an Academy about a month ago. I bought 3 boxes, all they had, it was a little spendy for me at $16.95 a box. I went back a few days later and they had more on the shelf.
Best buy for NATO ammo now days is from Samco
    http://www.samcoglobal.com/Ammunition.html#308

    Portugese NATO 55.9 per Round
    200 Rounds $111.80

S&B is slightly cheaper, but it isn't NATO
