Just think of how they were made back in the late 1800 or early 1900's. That is why a Blacksmith was so revered.

Exactly! I mean I'm using propane and mills and grinders they didn't have and this still took the snot out of me. I can't imagine how some of the old world art pieces were created.

    Awesome work, man!

How did you do the tree pattern on the leather ? Embossing by hand?

I've done an FeCl etch and a vinegar etch, but did you mix FeCl and vinegar together? I use 1/2 FeCl and 1/2 distilled H2O...what mix are you using?

The "embossing" was actually a laser raster etch done on a 1mw ULS laser. Basically I designed a layout in Adobe Illustrator and the laser did the rest.

For the blade and Damascus bolsters I used a 50/50 solution of FeCl and white distilled vinegar. Let it etch for about 40min.

I have a folding knife project going right now and I'll start a build thread for that when I get my new shipment of 6a4v Titanium.

Cool, thanks for the tip. I take it the vinegar makes it work slower, since the 50/50 FeCl and distilled at about 60-70 degs F is dayum quick. 10 mins max, 30 for super deep etch that shows metal crystalline patterns (martensitic steel) on hardened (tepmered) areas.

Well, I don't know what was going on in half of those pics, but the finished product speaks volumes... Artistry, nice work...BTW, if those old guys would have had lasers and propane furnaces they would have used them..so don't feel bad.
    I love you guys...
