    Some handguards, looking for feedback

Made this one for a guy on HKpro, wanted a flat sided look:

Going to cut another slot or two also.

Then some prototypes, kinda fooling around with lots of slots

I have to say, fitting the G3 caps is much easier than the cetme ones, lucky for me they're easier to come by.

I like the first one, reminds me of a L1A1 hg,I gots and old soft spot for L1A1s,heh. The more perforated ones seem more agreeable with ABS ,as that many holes in wood seem like it would weaken it under field abuse. Looks nice though...

No worries R, my almost glacial pace keeps demand lower than you'd think

The second two have so many slots because I'm messing around with the best placement for your finned barrel project. I may take some better pics of that last one or even send it to you to see which of those rows will work best for you.

I've been doing all these cuts on the milling machine at work (our current mechanic isn't much of a machinist, so doesn't fly into a rage about wood dust on the machines ), sooooo much easier than a router!

You are on the right track, but think bigger rather than more. If the slot was about 2.5 times larger in height and extended at least 2/3rd of the way across the handguard, you would only need two slots, one per side. That should show off the finned barrel plenty.

The slots in the last two are 1/4", the first 5/16". Might give a try to 3/8" slots, centered on the barrel or a bit above. As to length, it is a bit stronger to have multiple short slots than one or two long ones. Probably best to keep them under 2" long with at least 1/2" between. Doing these on the mill makes any combination about as easy as the next.

What do you think of the bottom slots? Yea or nay?

I brought a couple blanks to work with me this week and some new tooling to try out. Worked so well I wish I'd brought all I had on hand If I ever quit this job I may have to get myself a mill, they really are quite the thing for woodworking

JD - how hard would it be to turn out something inspired by the FG42 handguard? Something like the drawing below with the ribs and handstop? I think that would sell like hotcakes - hell I'd buy one that's for sure.
