First post, thank you guys for allowing me to be a part of your site. I was at a yard sale here on Ft Stewart, GA yesterday and came across a broken rifle. They told me 200.00 that it had never been fired and they thought it was broken. Took it to the range after cleaning and snapped in a 20rounder. Pulled the trigger and holy hell full auto. I got some weird looks at that point. Took it home and began learning how to take this thing apart. Got the trigger group tore down and had to order a hammer. The bubba trigger job took off to much of the surface. 5.00 online no big deal. Looking at the receiver it says le 39 of 500. Everything inside the rifle appears new and the barrel has 8 or 9 grooves. Does anyone know the twist on this barrel? I cast about a hundred 200gr round nose bullets for it and cannot wait to get this thing on the range.

Any info on the barrel twist and make would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Good deal...Fix that firing issue quickly and quietly....I really don't know much about sending lead down a 7.62x51. The muzzle velocity is rather high for non-jacketed bullets in my opinion, but I have been mistaken before.

200 gr. will be a little heavy for the twist rate on a cetme barrel. imho.

it should be a 4 groove 1 in 12 twist barrel if Spanish - i want to say the LE CETMEs had spanish barrels on them but not certain

I concur. Using the Greenhill equation, you can get a pretty good idea of the twist required for the length, velocity and specific gravity of the projectile.

According to Berger, 190 grain is as large as you should go with their copper jacketted, lead core bullet based on length and a modified Greenhill equation. You'd need a faster twist than your 1:12" otherwise. Note that the Barnes TSX all-copper bullets are of lower specific gravity and also longer for the same weight and require more twist still, which is why you can't go by weight. Focus on LENGTH.

Alright I sat down with a light in the barrel, it has 8 grooves for sure. Stopped everything off of the barrel and guess what. Not one stamp, or mark on it. I am an amateur gunsmith but have no idea how to measure twist.

Is there any way you can get some pictures of the rifle along with the barrel and rifling?

You could slug the bore with a longish lead slug and probably calculate or at least estimate the twist from that. Or use some Ferrosafe maybe? Never tried that myself but I have some my dad was using to do chamber castings before he died.

You'd also be able to easily confirm the # of grooves.
