    SGt. Shultz's rifle

Here's one for the fans of Hogans Heros, if you don't know what I'm talking about your too young, I know there are lots of you who do know....

Anyway Sgt. Shultz carrys and points alot (I don't remember him shoot it) a Krag rifle in the show. Now I know it is just T.V. but really I think the attetion to detail of the show on wepons and uniforms is pretty good. They do have soliders with Mausers, why would Shultz have a K-J? and it's not a Danish Krag, it is American.

Maybe it could have been captured from WW1? some US reserve units may have had them? or we sent some to other countries? Also it makes sense Germany might have given a prison camp guard a second rate rifle for guarding prisoners. So do you think is was intentional, or some other reason for it? What say you...Hogans_Heroes_-_Kar_5.jpg

I for one is way to young for this show but, I do remember it from those days home sick as a child. That and the price is right.

Being yet again home sick now as a grown up and with the wonderful invention of the internet I thought lets look this up because I'm a geek.

He was a ww1 vet, the rifle is never loaded and sometimes handed to POWs when he needs both hands. Talk about some gun safety!

Now for real Irony, for a decorated SS member.. he was Jewish in real life.

Very funny TV show, but "I know nothing!" about the rifle
p.s. I must have met his brother in Kartum, Sudan. He was guarding the U.S. Embassy. His brother had a locked and loaded AK47. I said "hi" to him - nice rifle.
He just handed it to me (no sh-t). I found myself in front of the embassy in civilian clothes with a loaded AK47, with a disarmed guard in front of me. He wasn't in
any hurry to take it back, despite by efforts to part with it

Deep down i think Shultzy was on our side LOL. But if you think about it, Shultzy would not shoot anybody anyway so why issue him a good rifle.

    Great photo
I liked that show also and noticed he had a Krag in the mid 1970s as we had a Krag. In one episode he handed the Krag to the French guy and you could clearly see it was a KJ.

On a related note, My 11 year old son watched re-runs of McHale's Navy this summer. I asked him what do you think? Dad watched this show everyday.

He said ''Boy they they sure were lax on the Navy in Vietnam''. I asked him why he thought it was Vietnam.
He assocated the Carbines, PT boats, jungle hut background, lagoons with SE Asia circa 1960s.. The twenty year interval between 1943 and 1963 meant nothing to my son who was born in 2000. He has a hard time keeping the Pacific war, Korea and Vietnam separate.
To him they all are the same war with different players. All the weapons look old to him, a MIG 15 might as well be a Zero
We thought about it for a long time, "Endeavor to persevere." And when we had thought about it long enough, we declared war on the Union

Many MIGs were zeros after tangling with American pilots.
