    Powder question

    Hello,
Im as new to reloading as I am to these forums. Im looking to reload 8mm mauser (195 grain sp), 303 british (174 gr fmj), 6.5 jap (140 to 160gr sp),and also 7mm-08 (140 gr sp). I was wondering if IMR 4064 would be a good powder to use. Thanks in advance

I used 38.2gr IMR 4320 over 175gr SP and 42.3gr over 147gr FMJ (pulled 7.62x54R light ball) in 7.7 Jap-- new to this caliber and currently neck sizing Norma brass

40.0gr IMR 4895 over 174gr FMJBT for 303 British, never loaded for 6.5 jap but I have a few articles on it. I think 7mm-06? is similar in pressures to .30-06 but have never loaded for it either

8mm Mauser-- still looking for a good blank load in that (converted .30-06 brass for blanks) and I use 46.0 of IMR 4895 with a 150 Speer spitzer and it shoots just fine. Try some 4064 if you have it; works great too. However... I have had some fun making my own 8x57 brass from .30-06, and it was -really- easy to do.

If you haven't done it, it's as simple as using the Lee cutting system for the 8mm Mauser on some decapped .30-06 brass, and after it's been cut down, you lube them up well and run them through the 8x57 FL sizer.

That's all it takes to make 8x57 brass and it works fine.

Work you up a load and she how she shoot. I run 4064 thru my wife's 700 in 308, it groups very well.

Goto hodgdons website, i pull all my load data from them.

4064 should be fine for the rounds you want to load.

4064 has worked well for me in .270win, .308 win, 30-06 and 8mm Mauser. I have not reloaded 6.5 Jap or .303 but I belive it would work well for your purposes. 3031 seems to be a jack of all trades as well.

Sacrelege! You can't screw up perfectly good -06 brass for 8mm! I use .270 or .280. I can get hundreds for free. You really have to aneal the necks before you start. I progressively neck them up to .284 - .308 - .323. Cut off 6mm and good to go. I mark the bases red with a magic marker to warn it is no longer what the head stamp says.

I even make .308 from .243 and 7mm -08 and 7 X 57 from 6mm Rem and .257 Roberts. If I fell into some .222 Mag brass, I might be tempted to make them into .223's

I had a 24/47 Mauser that shot Sierra 175 gr P/H w/ Varget very well and didn't beat up the gun or the shooter....

Imr 4064 is all I use in my 8mm Mausers. I use the Sierra 175gr. softpoint. On deer, it works perfect.
